Considering a plan to upgrade a panel from standard 6 pack to affordable glass, post purchase on a Bravo.  Usual reasons: modernize and lose some weight.

The plane has standard 6 (really 8) pack on left side along with new engine monitor.  Also a GMX-200 MFD mounted on the right side of the center avionics stack.

Brainstorm:  do a pair of new GI-275's and move the GMX-200 over to the left side, next to the 275 stack to have a "poor man's" glass panel.

Thoughts??

TIA!

Does the plane have traffic and weather displayed on the gmx?  If so I think it would be a great idea.  If not there are better ways of displaying charts/sectionals/airport info like a portable unit flush mounted 660/760.

Having said that, a 7 inch g3x mfd display w/eis would replace your failure prone factory gauges if they’re still installed along with a ton of extra features.

Whether it's a house or plane eventually someday you will sell it. Yes you should do it the way you want, but unless you factor in what you will be competing with when you sell it, it may take a long time to sell.

@PilotX, your panel upgrade was the example leading to the idea… The bird in question already has a 200 mfd, & clearly there is room to spare!  @LANCECASPER, your later sale point well taken, this would be an interim solution before going with a G3X for permanent solution, also riffing on @Mlm20c’s thoughts!

Thanks all for the feedback!

HH60…

See if you can add the word Bravo to your title…

We have a few threads that are similarly titled….

If we don’t differentiate the titles… expect some messy cross pollination to occur… :)

Another long body-er went with a pair of GI275s to toss two of the aging BK devices…

A great update for the here and now category…

Check the longevity expectations on the GMX200… They may not be worth trying to save…(?)

Quick question…

Is your Bravo a forever plane?

There are a few Long Bodies around here that qualify as forever-planes…

Those panels are getting G3X or G500txi or something like a big screen… with an EIS for data collection, display, and storage…

Plenty of pics around here…

PP thoughts only, not a panel kind of guy…

Best regards,

Don’t do “interim” in airplane avionics. It’s very expensive, increases failures, and vastly increases downtime.  If you know what you eventually want, save up and bite the bullet once.

Copy all, I suspect the labor to move it over would be better spent on installing the long term solution...

The prospective Bravo could be the forever plane if I can add some UL and efficiency to it...hence the "frugal" plan.  But hearing loud & clear that the labor cost to move the 200 is better spent on the permanent solution!!

Couldn't agree more. I've learned that personally. Plan it out and save up and do it once and do it right.

Also frugal doesn't have to be spartan. Don't lower your standards, lower your cost. Look carefully at the estimates and see where you can shave some expense off. I accumulated what I wanted at good prices and only had to figure out what the labor was going to cost.

If it was the predecessor (mx20) I wouldn’t waste another penny on it. However, the 200 does not have the screen problems and the UI is a little faster as well. The unit is pretty light so fabricating a bracket to mount it shouldn’t be that difficult. There’s also a good possibility the wiring might reach the left panel location.  Interfaced with a gtx345 would provide a lot of nice info and the screen quality is pretty good.

Good insights!  Will confirm it is a 200 vice the older MX20.

20 and 200 units were basically displays… expensive, and not very good…

People have gone with installing a Garmin portable in that location instead…  A GTN has such good nav graphics, the other devices are just less needed…

The portables are more up to the task without needing to be certified for what they are doing…. And easy to upgrade in a few years if desired…

PP thoughts only…

Definitely makes sense...an actual GPS with charts for less than the cost to move a piece of legacy gear...long live the Aera760!!
