Induction duct part# 600064 that goes between airbox and air cleaner seems impossible to get.  SWTA says there's a 5 week back order.  That 5 weeks has been 3 month now.  I contacted lasar and they say good luck getting one and recommended  wrapping the worn out duct with gorilla tape.  My question is has anyone made their own duct and if so can you give me details.

Bring the duct to an engien shop or auto parts or marine parts store and see if they have a match. I found marine components to be more rugged and reliable than aviation components.

ThumbsUP

If we all included year and model it would assist EVERYONE, clarify both questions and answers, and add value to the archives.

The Beech people do it, heck even the Cezzzna (CPO) folks do it. To much to expect from some Mooney drivers, I guess. eye rolling smiley

I replaced this duct some years ago on my 'C' model.  I had a terrible experience with it:  after spending an exhorbitant amount of money for it, it got a hole in it almost immediately.

I contacted a manufacturer's rep who told me a couple of things.  Based on the serial number, this particular duct had apparently been sitting on a vendor's shelf for years and years and was quite old when I got it.

Second thing (after a lot of back and forth discussion), the rep told me the manufacturer's cost of the duct was about $10 including manufacturing, inventoring, shipping and handling.  However, they had an iron-clad agreement to only sell at Mooney prices through the Mooney network, and "NO", he could not sell me one.

I suspect that if Mooney would "let go" of this item, we could get them easily/cheaply.  Regardless of where you come up with one, try to make sure it hasn't been sitting for years and years.

Patching/repairing may seem like the only way to go, but consider the negatives if the patch/repair material gets sucked into the carb!

After twenty years of ownership of my E-Model, I have about four similar sitting with tears and holes.  I think it is dangerous to use a caulk like RTV or small patches where a wad might break off and go into the engine.  If I were going to repair small holes in one I might lean toward something like 2" High-voltage, self-bonding, extra thick tape, with removable paper liner.  With an emphasis on full wraps.  It is available at Granger or your local professional electric supplier.  It is impressive stuff.  If you need a new one, you might want to give All American a try.

I am doing a top overhual on my F right now.   My induction boot is bad, it is not possible to see the damge to the boot when it is installed on the plane, you must pull the lower cowl and put the boot into your hands, then look at it.

I do not want to patch it, I am wondering about putting a scat tube over it untill a new one can be aquired. Any thoughts on this?  Please

Also, When I get a new on to install, put a scat over the new one to help protect it? Any thoughts, Please ??

Are there any other suggestions, Ideas???   Thanks

Ron

Ron,  The E and F boot you need is a completely different part than the one Kerry is having trouble sourcing.  I understand that it was a little redesigned in the past few years to make it wear better.  Stocks were put in place at that time.  I think Lasar or other MSCs can supply you.  I think I last paid over $350.  I can't see how you would put scat tubing over this short rectangular cross section part.  However, I am thinking of wraping my next new one with the heavy electrical, self bonding that I mentioned above, right from the start.  And maybe at my next annual in any case.  I usually see just a few small wear holes when failure starts.

I have checked Don Maxwell, Top Gun, Laser, Joey Cole and SWTA. All say 5 weeks. 5 weeks from when???

I think that if I took the wire out of the scat tube, Maybe with a little language help, I could slip one under the brackets that hold the duct into place. Then drill the scat so that the bolts can still thru.  I think that the wire would not be needed, there would not be much vacuum on the scat.

I just check and I do have the duct in stock, p/n 600064-000.  Date stamped on it is 2Q10 Rev. H  Who ever needs it can email me at:  service@tricityaero.com.

I'm not sure what the pricing on it is but it will be more than in the US.  It just reflects the shipping and customs cost I have to pay from Mooney in the US to Canada.
