Going south across the us border you can enter any Airport of Entry (i.e. has customs) that is most convienent for you. I suggest pick where about you'd like and then research the specific airport options on BajaBush Pilots website. The immigration fees (~$20/person) and entry/declaration fees are same everywhere and pretty much the same for fuel. Fuel has always been much cheaper in Mexico than in the US. However, airport fees vary a bit from airport to airport. Although you can ask for a multi-entry permit so that you can re-use for the remainder of the calendar year, you will have to purchase a new entry permit (and immigration visa's) entering from the southern border. New Visa's are required for each entry. The Entry permit is northern or southern border specific, thus why you'll end up getting two and are approx $60. Going North you can only enter at one of the two entry points already mentioned, unlike going south.

the biggest PITA involving crossing borders is the eAPIS and US Customs.  The US is the only country you have to get permission to leave.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the informative posts. I have been looking for reliable info. for hours. I am based in Tampa but would love to fly via Key West to Playa del Carmen and then to Roatan.  Any info would be greatly appreciated. Eapis and US customs etc. is really quite freindly. US customs will help you when they can. Even found a Mooney pilot who was a customs officer at Palm Beach who made my trip. If anyone has any ideas where else to visit while there would be also appreciated. Belize airspace is my main concern thus far. Safe flying...

Well, I just flew recently from Key West to Guatemala City overflying Mexico without landing there. I filled an international flight plan and no major problems. You have to be careful in Belice. Procedures in Belice are rather burocratic and may take  LONG.... It took me about two hours to get out of the airport. Mainly because they were very slow... :=)

A note of caution, gvien that the Mexican have now changed their rules regarding user fees, I would strongly recommend you check and double check with AOPA and/or www.caribbeanskytours.com about the new rules.

Last but not least I would recommend you hire a handler. They are cheap and most of the times they get you out of the airport fast.

Enjoy your trip.

AOPA insurance will issue you a letter indicating that you are covered in Mexico and that you you don't need any extra insurance. Regarding Central America, the policy covers Central America.
