Cruise Climb versus Max Effort (M20K TSIO360LB)

Just conducting a bit of a survey on the difference between max/cruise climb.  I'm a brand new owner of a 1979 M20K and wondering how the community decides to climb.  

Obviously the advantages of cruise climb are going to be best forward speed, longer time to altitude, and reduced wear and tear on the engine.  So if you have a massive tailwind and you want to get the push... it makes since to NOT cruise climb... and vise versa for a headwind.  But what I'm really trying to determine is if the reduced strain on the engine for the climb is significant or in the margins.  Thanks!

There are different reasons to choose what type of climb you want...

Some are good for clearing objects at the end of the runway...

Or getting to a safe altitude quickly...

Then there are efficiency issues...

Followed by what is good for the engine...

I like to climb out at 2k’pm... but my CHTs prefer a slightly more moderate climb...

Then there are those with larger maintenance wallets, who prefer to exchange a few cylinders in exchange for flying in Flaming Dragon Mode...

As PIC, you get to decide... or is that your finance administrator who does that?

I always climb full power (40”, 2700, 24-25 gph) at 110 kias. Provides solid climb performance, keeps the engine cool, and allows you to see over the nose so you don’t hit anything.

The K's do better in a full power climb. If you throttle back to cruise climb setting you can expect to see higher temps from a leaner mixture. The limited HP of the TSIO-360's just doesn't make them very good performers in the cruise climb power setting.
In contrast, flying the higher HP IO-550's and TSIO-550's have very effective cruise climbs with power reductions significant enough to not raise temps yet still provide plenty of climb power.
