After having my Kannad Integra AF for just over 5 years it is now time to replace the battery. During the annual we ordered a replacement kit from Spruce. When it arrived, however, it had a large notice in the package that it is "ONLY" to be installed by a Kannad Approved Operator, Kannad Approved Battery Replacement Center, or a Kannad Approved Service Center. My IA told me that batteries on ELTs are typically shop or user serviceable. I've called the numbers to a series of the shops listed on their approved battery replacement list, but have not gotten an answer nor have I gotten a call back. Is anyone here familiar with the process? Have you had one replaced before? I'm wondering if I shouldn't go with a different ELT for long term serviceability and ease of battery changes.  Thoughts and feedback are welcome.

Thanks!

That’s pretty common with EPIRBs, PLBs....if you asked them they will tell you they insure it’s waterproof and test it as well for their price...I’ve think $150 is in the ballpark of what it costs, although this is the world of aviation?

I have had the same unit in two different airplanes. They are great units but Kannad are total horses rear ends on service. Their previous service instructions allowed field servicing of the batteries then two years ago they changed it because some people were "messing it up". In particular the gasket to the battery compartment which keeps out corrosions and is why the battery pack is good for 6 years. The problem is you can ship it without the battery but the service centers don't want to ship it back with a battery inserted because it is LI. Catch 22. To be honest everyone I know, field services the batteries unless they can fly to a service center.. Just don't over torque the screws and crush the seal. I sent mine out to Mid Continent to get the operation verified, then inserted the battery pack when I got it back.

If you are Canadian you must by law check the 406 function. There is some discussion as to "signal emission" checks in the US, but the design requirements that the 406 portion be "self checking" while a physical 121.5 check seems to be sufficient.
