TGreen Posted September 20, 2020 Report Posted September 20, 2020 Any recommendations for a flight school where two of us (my son and I) would be able to both get tailwheel endorsements ideally over a three day period? Would consider any location in the lower 48. Quote
RLCarter Posted September 20, 2020 Report Posted September 20, 2020 Might consider combining a tailwheel endorsement with an intro to Acro, just a thought 1 Quote
Air pirate Posted September 20, 2020 Report Posted September 20, 2020 (edited) Pilot Makers is Provo UT can get you checked out in their Citabrias https://pilotmakers.com/ Edited September 20, 2020 by Air pirate 1 Quote
EricJ Posted September 20, 2020 Report Posted September 20, 2020 I did my tailwheel training at Chandler Air Service at Chandler airport near Phoenix, AZ. They have a few Super Cubs for tailwheel and a couple of Lake biplanes for aerobatics, should you want to do that.http://aerobatics.com/flight-training/ 1 Quote
HIghpockets Posted September 20, 2020 Report Posted September 20, 2020 I received my tailwheel endorsement at Aeroflex/Andover 12N in NJ with Damian DelGazio. Flew the Aviat Husky on tundra tires. Quote
Jerry 5TJ Posted September 20, 2020 Report Posted September 20, 2020 How about Sunrise Aviation there at KSNA? They have several taildragger aircraft and teach acrobatics basic to advanced. Quote
carusoam Posted September 20, 2020 Report Posted September 20, 2020 HP’s recommendation in NJ... Good short runway experience as well... Plane wash on both ends of the runway... NYC and Philly nearby... https://airnav.com/airport/12N Best regards, -a- 1 Quote

My brother got his endorsement from Damien, and I got my endorsement from my brother. 1 1 Quote

carusoam Posted September 20, 2020 Report Posted September 20, 2020 Father / son trip across the USA? Epic journey, a few MSers have done it. Best regards, -a- Quote
Mooneymite Posted September 20, 2020 Report Posted September 20, 2020 Not everyone needs a tailwheel endorsement. The training and endorsement required by paragraph (i)(1) of this section is not required if the person logged pilot-in-command time in a tailwheel airplane before April 15, 1991. (61.31 Type rating requirements, additional training, and authorization requirements.) Quote

Not that it matters but HIghpockets made that recommendation to fly with Damian and...I would fly my J to the 1981' runway and hop into the Husky. Don't think they have the Husky now, just a couple of Supercubs. Quote

It does matter, without the post numbers... it is hard to reference who said what when pointing somebody in the right direction... As far as my writing skills go... they have come along way over the years... Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
MB65E Posted September 21, 2020 Report Posted September 21, 2020 CP aviation in Santa Paula is alright. I have a friend with an S2A that is doing a lot of teaching. Sunrise Aviation is not what it once was. Chandler is good. Sean Tucker’s school has shut down to the public but will do personal training. He had a lot of international students so they just closed it temporally due to Covid. Greg Koontz has a nice bed and breakfast teaches in super D’s. hope that helps! I would recommend a better part of a week to have you both finished. It’s great training and will make you a much better pilot. -Matt 1 Quote
GeeBee Posted September 27, 2020 Report Posted September 27, 2020 Aerodynamic Aviation at Reid-Hillview in San Jose. Used to be Amelia Reid Aviation. Great school for tail draggers, was the best in the world when Amelia was alive. https://www.aerodynamicaviation.com/training/tailwheel/ 1 Quote
jlunseth Posted September 28, 2020 Report Posted September 28, 2020 Its a long way, but Inflight Training at Flying Cloud has very good tailwheel instructors. I’ll bet you could get a tailwheel at Aviation Performance Solutions in Pheonix (KIWA) in an Extra 300, but there would b alot more interesting stuff than that, they would want to teach you. 1 Quote
The Other Red Baron Posted September 30, 2020 Report Posted September 30, 2020 Another long flight but the local school near me is going all into the whole backcountry tailwheel experience. Good instructors, good planes, some good grass strips around here. https://www.iflysummit.com/backcountry 1 Quote
BKlott Posted October 1, 2020 Report Posted October 1, 2020 Tim Preston at Preston Aviation at KGIF Winter Haven, Florida does tailwheel training in a Cub and has a Stearman as well. I flew with him for my tailwheel endorsement back in 2000 (where did those twenty years go?). Tim is a great Instructor, experienced and fun to fly with. His nice wife, Peggy, runs the office. Vacation in Florida and fly with Tim. 1 Quote
Phil K Posted August 23, 2024 Report Posted August 23, 2024 I would strongly recommend Www.tailwheel-endorsement.com They fly from Tucson Arizona, you should be able to do it in one or two days in their Super Cub or your own aircraft. 1 Quote
Schllc Posted August 23, 2024 Report Posted August 23, 2024 A tail wheel endorsement is an excellent add on for any pilot. It really illustrates the importance of rudder. Our tricycle gear allows us to be very sloppy in technique , and you really come to understand that when you start learning to land a tail dragger. I did mine in a cub, and obtained it to ferry a a 180 across the country with a friend. The cub is very forgiving compared to the Cessna. everything was hunky dory until, Cheyenne Wyoming. Let’s just say we had a moment where our back pants pockets were touching….it doesn’t take but one once for you to realize there is no room for error or complacency, you have to be on it! It will change the way you fly for the better. 1 Quote
Pinecone Posted August 25, 2024 Report Posted August 25, 2024 LOTS of places. But this one intrigues me. They teach in J-3 Cubs and/or Stearman. But they use the USAAFC training syllabus. So you train like a pilot going into the USAAC in WWII. https://ww2flighttraining.com/ 2 Quote
Phil K Posted September 14, 2024 Report Posted September 14, 2024 I would strongly recommend http://Www.tailwheel-endorsement.com These guys are the real deal. All Pros Quote
Hank Posted September 14, 2024 Report Posted September 14, 2024 There used to be a school near Huntsville, AL. The name of the airport reminded me of Moon Pies, but I can't remember it. A quick check of AirNav shows this to be 3M5, Moontown Airport, 2200' of turf in good condition. But it does not show any businesses operating there. Does anyone know if he is still running? Seems he also offered aerobatic and unusual attitude recovery training, a rare opportunity. Quote
Schllc Posted September 15, 2024 Report Posted September 15, 2024 Does anyone know if a stearman is considered a “warbird”? Quote
