Johnson Bar Boot

Time to make another J Bar Boot.  The one I have still works but has a slight tear (1/2").  It is made from Eurostretch.  The pattern we used was a

flat piece of leather with a small vertical 1 1/2" tall "cuff" (cylinder) that fits around the lower portion of the J bar and is sewn vertically into the "flat" piece of leather.  The "flat" piece of leather in the end really is not flat since it has 4 small pleats emanating from the J bar towards each corner giving the flat piece of leather a bit of a slight pyramid shape.  

Is this the form that most of you guys are using or are there other designs that may work better?  Pictures are always good.  Any advice on sewing.

I have some leather that is in the 1-2 oz. range.  I need to look-up the hide type (I may be sheep or goat) but is very stretchable.

What ever you use make sure it doesn't bunch up between the bar and the nose wheel bay keeping you from latching the gear down (handle up)

Aero Comfort in San Antonio makes them and does a great job on them. Call Hector and give him your serial number and he’ll know exactly what you need. The price list from 2014 lists it at $60, so I wouldn’t think it would be too much more than that.

There's an incident in the NTSB database where someone had their ailerons lock up because a small flashlight had fallen down the hole at the bottom of the Johnson bar. They managed to get the controls unfucked and have it not become an accident.

I installed this instead of the boot.  Very easy to install and looks good.  See picture, sorry didn't have a full view.

Did you use one brush on one side or did you put a brush on either side of the bar.

When Bruce Jaeger showed me, it was one on each side.  You would only need to buy one sweep, though, and just cut it in half.

The only concern with the "sweep" idea is that it blocks CO less well (the original Mooney Boot back from the 60's actually had a rubberized coating on the bottom side apparently for that reason) and it could also let small objects fall through it.  Sheep and Goat leather are surprisingly stretchy and more durable than euroleather.
