I'm trying to get quotes for my adsb install and I need to know what encoder I have, to know if it will work with the new avionics. Will it be up under the panel? All I know is I have a Bendix King 76a transponder. Would I be able to see it if I pulled the transponder out of the rack? I don't see anything in the logs that says one has been replaced for upgraded. The avionics shop says it's probably an original encoder. Thanks for any help.

You can follow the wiring from the KT-76A to the encoder.  There will be about 8 wires to the encoder. Or, follow the static hoses and that will lead you to the encoder.

No, peering into the mounting tray probably won't reveal the encoder.

It is possible your encoder is inside your altimeter.  If so that instrument will probably be marked "Encoding" on its face.

The encoder could also be in the avionics bay. Mine was. Again, follow the static lines.

In my J it's located on the front of the nosewheel well down low. It's just to the right of the pilot's right rudder pedal. If you can stick your head into the footwell it's easy to access.

The new weight and balance sheet didn't have it listed. I got stuck trying to contort myself all around to look for it:) It looks like the static lines either split or come to right at the altimeter. Then there is a line that goes to the gear switch. On a side note, I thought I had a squat switch. Does that mean this plane has an airspeed switch? The front of the altimeter says aerosonic digitizer. I googled that and says it is an encoding altimeter. So I'm guessing that is my encoder, but it doesn't say encoding on it.

Looks like you solved it. Here's an ad from Flying back in April 1975

Lol, looks like I'll be getting a new altimeter with the adsb install as well.

After 1977 Mooney did away with the squat switch in the J. At annual you can test the retract system when up on jacks. It shouldn't retract without pushing the magic red button at the top of the panel.

When we were going through the annual at Dugosh when I bought it I'm pretty sure we were raising the gear without pushing the red button. But I am probably wrong.

If your gear retracts on jacks without pushing this button you risk an accidental retraction on the ground. I'm betting Dugosh would have caught that at annual. If it helps, I already forgot what I had for lunch.

Charles...they did the retract test without using the button...here's how..they attached a 12 in 3/8 surgical tube to the pitot tube than rolled it up ..the AI shows over 70 mph and the gear retracts...the red button simply bypasses your airspeed safety switch.Regarding your AdsB install...a BK Kt-74 is a direct slide and your IFD 440 when upgraded to 10.2 has sentence structure compatible with the K the-74...the pair are not stc as legal yet but since it is Trig based am told it will be.text me for more info that I cannot relate here.

Why is that...as long as it transmit greyscale (your old kt76a uses this)you are golden

If I go with the full Avidyne adsb upgrade the AXP340 or the skytrax100 requires a newer encoder. I'm told at least an ACK30.9. So it would do away with the encoded altimeter. And I wasn't sure if it functions properly if it's not hooked to anything. It also needs to be calibrated it's about 120 feet off. Not sure if it has a problem or somewhere else.

Got your texts and I'll hit you up with some more questions when we have time. Are you out playing in the sun this weekend? It was spitting snow this morning then rained and blew hard till about eleven. Now the sun is out. Wanted to fly to Boise but doesn't look like it will be in the cards

Out in the sun this weekend...not sure why you have to replace encoder ,my AXP 340 install manual show greyscale inputs (as all trig produced units do)Your existing encoder does not output rs232 altitude data but you don't need that for adsB ...the only thing the AXP has going for it is a current stc....but they can't reuse your old tray ...additional install costs that could pay for your weeklong honeymoon hotel bill...and a chunk of the bar bill to boot!

It might be the skytrax100 that needs the new encoder. I'll ask Chase. It's better to spend the money on the plane now since I'm not married.... yet:) Pacific Coast wanted $10,045 for the total, $4,560 was just labor. I about crapped. I can get the avionics from Avionics Source and save just over $1000 and a guy that does a few planes here said he could do the install for less than $2,000. I'll get a few more quotes and see how the options open up. I have till September for the faa rebate to be over. I do like your cheap route though.

Just because I'm a smart ass, that would be grey code.

Oh crap....I am trying to save the new Mooney owner/fiancé..from getting too raked over coals on install costs!.....do you really think it matters at this point what correct termology is since you obviously idented it?

Of course not, but I didn't have anything constructive to say.

Well I I thought about it for awhile. I liked Anthony's post about the Greek meaning of Freedom. Because it has given that to me. Even though it's far from free:)
