peevee Posted February 1, 2017 Report Posted February 1, 2017 We have one, I'm curious who made it, where it came from etc. I lucked across it googling rudder trim, so maybe it's a really common part? http://motoplaneparts.com/listing.php?pid=96376 Quote

MooneyMitch Posted February 1, 2017 Report Posted February 1, 2017 You are correct. Norm Smith was our MooneyMiser. Norm was an active MAPA LOG contributor. Norm was always creating some gadget for our airplanes. One of his products was Aeroseal, which was used to seal leaking tanks from the outside rather than internal patching. The process was to create a small vacuum inside the tank, then apply Aeroseal from the outside, sucking the product into the leak and sealing. I have a ton of old MAPA LOGs in which Norm provided gadget articles and monthly adds for his Aeroseal. Seeing Norm's name appear here and folks asking about him is making me feel vintage myself. Probably because I am getting to be vintage!!! I'll gather a couple of LOGs today, take a couple of photos and post later today. Norm was quite a character! 1 Quote
peevee Posted February 1, 2017 Author Report Posted February 1, 2017 Dang that was easy, thanks Quote

MooneyMitch Posted February 1, 2017 Report Posted February 1, 2017 I did apply Aeroseal years ago on my F model. It did seal my small leaks. Longevity? Unknown as I liquidated the plane a couple of years later. Incidentally, you can see my former F Mooney in Hartzell's Top Prop ad for older M20s. Fun! Brings back some very great memories and thrills! Here's the Hartzell photo from their ad. Quote
peevee Posted February 1, 2017 Author Report Posted February 1, 2017 interesting that there aren't more people trying it. I'm tempted. Quote
MooneyMitch Posted February 1, 2017 Report Posted February 1, 2017 My opinion, and certainly not to offend the late, great, funny, and oh so "thrifty" MooneyMiser, or his family, but I believe the Aeroseal is a bandaid. It was created for very, very minor seeps. Norm himself, repeatedly professed this. Precise vacuum and application is required for success. Quote

Sorry, I missed that part of your original post. That motor looks like a pretty standard little DC motor. You might be able to replace it yourself. Quote
Marauder Posted February 1, 2017 Report Posted February 1, 2017 interesting that there aren't more people trying it. I'm tempted. Lots of new owners don't know about it. Phil is no longer in this earth to pitch it.Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote

Problem is the stupid thing is riveted on so it's hard to just take it off and sneak a peak, since the plane will be down it might be faster just to send it in 1 Quote
LANCECASPER Posted February 2, 2017 Report Posted February 2, 2017 might be able to get a cheap new one if no one else bids http://www.ebay.com/itm/Aero-Trim-Aileron-Rudder-Trim-Control-MSRP-899-FAA-PMA-Cessna-Piper-Mooney-/282343085377?hash=item41bcf59541:g:w3cAAOSw5cNYhSiE&vxp=mtr Quote
MooneyMitch Posted February 2, 2017 Report Posted February 2, 2017 Norm Smith, the Mooney Miser contributed heavily for many years to the MAPA LOG, prior to his demise. I've attached one photo of Norm's ads as it appeared in the LOG in 2001. Another photo is of one of his articles published in a 1992 LOG. 1 Quote
Raptor05121 Posted February 2, 2017 Report Posted February 2, 2017 Dang that looks really cool. One thing I will give Piper is their decision to add rudder trim to the Cherokee series. I really wish we would have gotten some sort of rudder trim 1 Quote

Is there an stc anywhere for it, it would help take offs and go arounds a great deal i think The Aero-trim is STC'ed as both aileron AND rudder trim for the M20B thru M20K. http://www.aerotriminc.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/stclist.pdf http://www.aerotriminc.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/aerotriminstructions.pdf Quote
carusoam Posted February 3, 2017 Report Posted February 3, 2017 Some of the Long Bodies got electric rudder trim. It is subtle. But, well appreciated. It works pretty well on the ground. It can steer the plane enough to follow the taxi line. In the air, it centers the ball. Climb is different than cruise. Cruise is different than descent. Ready for the go around is time to set the trim again... Best regards, -a- Quote
