George Posted November 9, 2016 Report Posted November 9, 2016 Hi All, I would like to replace landing light (NLI 4522 12v 250W) with LED landing light. I was hoping Aircraft Spruce could point me in the right direction with no success. Is it as easy as removing GE bulb and replacing with LED assuming I find the correct LED replacement? 1964 M20C single landing light pax side Thanks, GHW Quote
macosxuser Posted November 9, 2016 Report Posted November 9, 2016 Price to benefit ratio seems to lead here: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/pages/el/landinglights_zlamps/whelenplus461l.php Quote
Hank Posted November 9, 2016 Report Posted November 9, 2016 (edited) I put a Whelen Parmetheus in my C. Works great! Be aware that polarity of the connection matters in the LED, but not on the old one. Other than that, it's a direct swap. You'll need the PAR46 size. Edited November 9, 2016 by Hank Quote
bradp Posted November 9, 2016 Report Posted November 9, 2016 One thing I've noticed is that I am maxed out on my downward adjustment screw and have it aimed a bit high still. The frame of the Whelen compared to the GE bulb is definitely different. I may need to get a longer set screw to angle it down a bit more. Quote
LANCECASPER Posted November 9, 2016 Report Posted November 9, 2016 Putting in an LED landing light makes a lot of sense - no more burned out lights that you find out about as you are coming in at night. Much less current draw. Many people leave them on whenever the Master is on - makes a great recognition light. 2 Quote
George Posted November 9, 2016 Author Report Posted November 9, 2016 Thanks guys...Whelen Parmetheus it will be.. Hank-what is the small opening above your air filter? Quote
Raptor05121 Posted November 9, 2016 Report Posted November 9, 2016 If price isn't a worry, the AeroLeds Sunspot 46 is the brightest PAR46 size out there, from my research and hands-on at SnFhttp://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/sunspot46lx.php?clickkey=362898 Quote
Yetti Posted November 9, 2016 Report Posted November 9, 2016 whelen also sells par 46 bulbs led bulbs that go on other equipment that are about half of the ones that go on airplanes..... I would doubt their tooling is different for the airplanes one. The non airplane ones are about half the price. 1 Quote

Andy95W Posted November 9, 2016 Report Posted November 9, 2016 2 hours ago, George said: Hank-what is the small opening above your air filter? It is a cooling air inlet that is ducted, via scat tubing, to blow on the engine driven fuel pump. Quote
carusoam Posted November 9, 2016 Report Posted November 9, 2016 On the 65C, that cooling hole was ducted directly to the generator. I don't recall the details where the fuel pump got it's cooling from. Possibly a Y..? Generators didn't have an integral fan like alternators have. Best regards, -a- 1 Quote

I think Anthony has a good point- both of my M20Cs had the alternator conversion, and I can't remember the last time I worked on a generator equipped M20. My only question would be where does the pre-alternator M20E get its generator cooling from? The E/F models don't have this hole because of the ram air inlet. Of course, the 50+ year old parts and service manuals don't have any information on it at all. 1 Quote

Get the Parmetheus Plus - it's about 40% brighter than the Parmetheus. I can get you 10% off through Spruce. PM me. 1 Quote

I've heard rumors that some folks have installed the non-aviation Par46 Whelens and have had good luck with them....they even leave them on all the time and go many years without replacing them.....
