I had my first Garmin Pilot crash today.  I have only been using Garmin Pilot since this past December when I switched over from WingX.  It happened when I pressed the "Connext" button to check on the charging status of my GDL39 3D's battery.  Jim

I think the new "fix" they installed last night is causing issues. My GP locked up twice out to Wisconsin today. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Same here, both times it was when I selected the Airport page, after accepting a flightplan update from my Flightstream.

Also, the DisCum values are wrong:

While on the subject of Garmin Pilot, I need a new iPAD Mini. As far as iPAD features go, does Garmin Pilot require that the iPAD have the cellular feature or can I get away with buying one that doesn't have the cellular guts?

I saw the distance problem too.

FB,

On the original iPad, the GPS was part of the cellular package.  So many options have become standard as part of the main chip.

Sorry, you would have to check the apple website for better details.  Looks like it has become a standard on the iPad mini 4...

Fast wireless connectivity.

iPad mini connects to fast Wi-Fi and cellular networks, so you can download content, browse the web, and share documents from virtually anywhere. When you’re not near a Wi-Fi hotspot, the Wi-Fi + Cellular model connects you to fast cellular data networks around the world.* And with Apple SIM, you can choose a plan quickly and easily in over 100 countries and territories right from your device.

I ordered one of the last new iPAD 3's still available, with cellular. The reason I went with the 3 is Apple changed the dimensions of the 4 and it wouldn't fit into our existing yoke mount, which is used by all partners.

Just to keep everyone current on the issues I am seeing with 8.4.1. GP has locked several times using it today. It has dropped the connection to the GDL-39 several times and it also won't show the traffic details for planes found in the information circle.

Both of my iPads lost connection with my GDL39 3D when I flew with GP three days ago, too, Chris. That had never happened to me before, either. Just FYI.

Jim

Which iOS version are you folks running?

My Garmin Pilot crashed today too...several times.  Thankfully not in flight...just working a Redbird sim session (in a 172 since it has the fake KLN94).  Android on a Nexus 7.  And my wind altitude slider again is locked up at FL420.  Not good for Garmin....

Just learned at OSH that starting in August Foreflight will connect to the GDL-39.  Thinking about changing over.

Shame, I really like(d) Garmin Pilot.

Garmin will acquire Foreflight...no doubt about it now.  Everyone will either be in the Garmin world or be out.  The guys who started FF will be multi-centi-million richer...  Good on them!

A fairly hefty offer was already made and refused from what I've heard. Tyson and the gang have a lot of pride that they've dominated the market from day one, and none of them are going hungry. I'd gladly bet that five years from now Foreflight is still independent.

I like Garmin Pilot and plan to stick with it, but I hope you are right anout Foreflight remaining independent.  The first thing that Garmin would do if they acquired Foreflight is raise their prices exorbitantly.

Isn't FF more expensive than GP, especially with the options?

I'll take that bet!  Garmin will purchase FF....within the next year or so from now.  Investment bankers, the slickest and best dressed used car salesmen in the world, will convince the FF founders the need to "unlock the value" of what they've created.  Rationally, the bankers will be right...sell at the top to a larger and better financed competitor.  Ideally though, they really need a bidding contest between buyers...and Jeppesen (a division of Boeing) would also be a logical buyer too.  Frankly, I am kind of surprised that didn't already happen.

iOS, Chris?

Garmin Pilot 8.4.1 and iOS 9.3.2 (haven't upgraded to 9.3.3).

Garmin Pilot Version 8.4.2, released a few days ago on iOS, seems to have fixed the Bluetooth connection problem that I was having previously.

Jim

I used 8.4.2 yesterday and found it to be very stable.

Interesting question. It should only require to have Wi-Fi. But then how would you get WX, METARS, TFRs and other info that changes hourly when you are not within Wi-Fi range. Also I notice the approach charts get updated periodically.

I just switched from Samsung S3 to S7 Active and found big improvements. The S7 charge last for three days and the downloads are at least twice faster. The display resolution is better with no need to zoom in for reading the approach plates. The Active version is the ruggedized one. The camera is also better but will not make me look younger on the pictures. On my first phone trial I called my sister in law and I was shocked on how good she sounded. It was like she was next to me talking. I noticed the phone does preemphasis on the high notes to improve intelligibility, thus the "s' are clearly heard. The receiver sensitivity was also improved making possible to connect in areas were there was marginal or no coverage. It also has a stand alone compass that works better than the one in my plane. Handy for finding the right exit at the mall.
