Tommy Posted May 10, 2015 Report Posted May 10, 2015 Hi guys! My J is up for the bi-annual avionics check and I am thinking about putting in a backup electrical attitude indicator (14v). My panel has got a useless assigned altitude window that I can use (see photo below). Is it a good place to put it? Also any recommendations on which electrical backup attitude to buy? Also how long does it take to install one in by the shop? Thanks! Quote
Jerry 5TJ Posted May 10, 2015 Report Posted May 10, 2015 This solid-state AI is appealing. Full-width display, no moving parts, stable within seconds of power-up, won't tumble, only about 2" deep. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/rca2600-3.php 1 Quote
carusoam Posted May 10, 2015 Report Posted May 10, 2015 Would you prefer the electronic style...? Or electric gyro...? There are many choices in the 2-3 AMU bracket. Dynon portable for 1 AMU. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/dynond2_11-12158.php Best regards, -a- Quote
Tommy Posted May 10, 2015 Author Report Posted May 10, 2015 Prefer electrical gyro! Also, what's this tilt thing? 0 or 8-degree? And how many hours to install one, realistically? Thanks Quote

It's as fast and smooth as the vacuum based KI-256 and there aren't any moving parts in it. If you get the optional inclinometer you can replace you turn coordinator with this unit. I did an IPC 2 weeks ago and the instructor failed both my 530 and the primary AI. Flying an ILS with this backup AI and the "plain old" nav head was a breeze! Dave Quote
FlyDave Posted May 10, 2015 Report Posted May 10, 2015 I have a Sigma Tek electric AI with inclinometer (SigmaTek 5000EG; PN: 1U670-001-1) that needs to be rebuild. Sigma Tek wants ~ $1,100 to rebuild it. I'll sell it for $600 if you're interested. Quote
carusoam Posted May 10, 2015 Report Posted May 10, 2015 Tilt is related to the IP's vertical nature. Some panels have various bends to accommodate different things including viewing angle. The M20 C is known for having a bend in the middle of it...expect the J to be 0°, but check to be sure... Best regards, -a- 1 Quote

flyboy0681 Posted May 11, 2015 Report Posted May 11, 2015 This post is timely as I've been talking with my partner about a backup AI and I really didn't know what the options were. Luckily we have an open spot on the panel to mount one. Quote
joepilot Posted May 11, 2015 Report Posted May 11, 2015 I stuck a Dynon D1 in the ADF hole. Doesn't have the flush & professional look I like like, but got mine for $1100 & completely independent, it's got a lot of info to hopefully save the day. The D2 may be their new option though. Lot cheaper than any backup ADI plus installation I could find. http://www.dynonavionics.com/docs/D1_intro.html 2 Quote
Guest Posted May 11, 2015 Report Posted May 11, 2015 If the Australian airworthiness authorities would allow the Dynon, I would choose it over others. I have a client who uses one as a back up to his G1000. Clarence Quote

Two Aspen, 1 vacuum, 2 iPads and the Dynon! Now that is what I call REDUNDANCY! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
PTK Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 Price aside, anyone have input or opinion on this: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/mcmd302sam.php Can we even put it in our Mooneys? Quote
Hank Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 Man, I dislike Airspeed and Altitude tapes . . . Quote

Man, where do you guys get your money from? I am actually thinking about getting the D2 Dynon and simply clip mount onto the spare 3" 1/8. So technically it's not "installed" but it's there when I need it! Quote

I put one in and it is a very nice unit! I have pulled the CB and the battery backup is better than advertised, the screen is bright and easy to see. I gained 11 lbs of useful load by removing my vacuum system which i did have a 2nd electric vacuum. Quote
AndyFromCB Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 What about Sandia Quatro? I played with it at Oshkosh last year and it seemed like a solid unit for the money, and the battery was built it... http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/sai340-11-12817.php?clickkey=1466805 Quote

I was waiting for this unit but they are way behind on getting it certified. It looks good on paper but the fact it has been in use in the experimental world for a while and it is taking much longer than projected to get certified makes me wonder what the hiccups are. The price point is aggressive compared to the competitors and I was waiting as long as I could until my backup steam guages went out. They finally gave up on me and ended up buying the SAM unit. If the Aspen backup unit becomes available that will be the best bang for the buck! Quote
carusoam Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 Tying two threads together...? http://mooneyspace.com/topic/15370-sandia-sai-340-quattro/ -a- Quote
MB65E Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 Hi Pete, I really dislike the SAM. The install is not clean. The way it displays the stuff on two screens is silly. I don't see the value of the unit. We had it spec'd out for standbys in some helicopters. It's non standard sizing requirements made it difficult to install. The screens felt more "experimental" than some of the certified stuff. We ended up with the L3 Triligoly. Now in the Mooneys I would say the L3 is way overkill. A nice standby would be RCallen's digital 2600 ADI. No airspeed or altitude, but a nice solid ADI. Also I have not checked pricing on any of the L3 stuff in the last 2 years but their prices are coming down and the gee-Wizz factor was going up a while back. -Matt Quote
