Does anybody know anything about flying in China?

Now that Mooney has been bought by a Chinese company, one thought path is that they bought it so that they could sell Mooneys to the new GA community that is forming over there.

So if there is GA there, does their airspace look the same as ours? Specifically, are they going to need ADS-B equipment?

If the latter is true, then those clever devils are going to be marketing a Stratus II like device for next to nothing.

That price seems more like it. Just this morning I was thinking of taking the $10 software defined radios and making an accessory out of them, but if this is available, that'd be good enough.

I wish some clever young buck would do that. Take a dongle, give it a BT interface and then write an iPad app.

No one has done that, have they?

I am too old to play any more...

Also, another problem is the USB ports on most portable systems are not fully functional as they would be on full sized laptops and desktop units.  Even if the USB ports were "functional" as far as data transfer is concerned, Androids and iPads probably don't have enough 5 volt current at the USB port to drive external devices, so whatever digitally controlled radio you attach to your portable device is not likely going to be able to power the goodies attached without a 5 v breakout power wire.

If anyone knows how to translate the data packages used in 978 MHz, please contact me so we can get these software defined radios up and running for us cheapbastard$ who have fully functioning USB's

Sorry to steal your topic HRM, but it did kind of morph that way

Phil, no one was forthcoming about Chinese airspace, so no biggy.

Of course, this begs the question as to what we might expect after all those new Mooneys show up in China. Will we be getting some Chinese Mooniacs?

As for USB, that's why I said BT, which means Bluetooth. Solves the "no USB socket" problem. There's probably an interface chip out there somewhere. Then again, you could just build the radio from scratch with a BT interface.

Ahhhhh...wish I was 20 again.

At this time, GA is limited to 1000 meters (3300 ft)  AGL and below. Also flight plans are mandatory and must be filed and approved the day prior. But things are looking up. The celling has been raised from 500 meters and is expected to be loosened further over the next year or so. I doubt the investment in Mooney would have been made, unless the outlook was good for GA going forward.

Chinese airspace is predominately militarily controlled to the point that a majority of commercial flights are delayed as a result of their activities. I can't imagine how GA would function in the short term.

I fly into China all the time.  Beijing and Shanghai.  I have never been delayed (never even had to hold) and have had very good experience with the controllers.  They speak good english and are very professional.  I am not an expert on filing the flight plan as I have a dispatcher that does that, however, you do need approval to enter the airspace and I am not sure how GA would be accepted.  Instrument flying is mostly just like US except for these big differences.  They do not fly in feet, they fly in meters and the transition altitude and transition flight levels are not the same as the US.  Winds are measured in meters per second and your altimeter setting will be in hectopascals for QNH.  Not sure about ADS-B.  Be sure to be familiar with the ball notes and to comply with them.  You will also need a Chinese visa.

Is this from experience or did you read this somewhere.  In four years, I've not experienced this at all.  In fact, I'm regularly delayed here in the US on flights, but never in China. I would expect that this is just because the airspace is not as congested in China yet.  I'm sure it will get there, but it seems to be run very professionally today.

I spend about two weeks a month doing the Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong circuit plus a smattering of other "exciting" places. Always delayed on the domestic flights for flow control which has been explained to me as military sequencing. In and out never had any issue, but domestic sucks especially if you head out west. I have been to Urmqui about a dozen times and coming back out always an issue. I work on the freight side of the business (non-pilot) and in general China is a nightmare which is why everything out of Guandong for the most part flows to Hong Kong versus flying out of SZX or CAN.

Just my experience

OK, you are on the domestic side.  That explains the difference.  Do they have you do a lot of holding as well?

They seem to delay departure or slow way down enroute versus holding. It has happened but I wouldn't say it is common.
