I think the standard from the factory was on the cylinder #3 exhaust header (likewise the CHT probe on #3 cylinder)...presumably because this cylinder typically runs hotter than the other three....but I'm sure most will agree that you need one on each exhaust header...ie an engine monitor...

the egt probe are on the exhaust pipes.

look for the brown color pipes as the heat discolor them. Or the one that would burn your hand if you touch then after you just shut down the engine

If you have just one, it will be on the #3 (closest cylinder to the copilot seat)

It is a four cylinder engine. You need four EGT probes and four CHT probes if you are putting in an engine analyzer. You will need to drill holes in the exhaust pipes for the new probes. Drill them all the same distance down and the same orientation. The CHTs work best in the thermowells, but you will need a spark plug ring for number 3.

Most people in the know would like four...

Ovations have seven EGTs...

It's like having a window into each cylinder to keep an eye on all the important things...

Keep in mind on an N registered plane, your mechanic would be overseeing your work and signing your logs.

Is it possible to put the factory CHT on a spark plug ring and have all four engine analyzer probes setup the same way? Otherwise you would never trust/believe #3 on your EDM

You can use the adaptor gasket CHT probe to have both factory and JPI probes - it is mandatory for any certified aircraft with cowl flap to keep the factory CHT.

Would that likely give false readings   ??

In my experience, the EGT probe requires a 3/16" hole.  They should be positioned 4"-8" from the exhaust flange.  Uniform placement is essential so the readings are comparable.  You must place the thermocouple beyond the flame front.

Since you are likely starting with a single factory probe, drill the other cylinder holes at approximately the same distance.
