Arron....mind sharing with us what Tejas is charging these days for a paint job.

As far as quality, I don't think you'll find a better shop in the country......and I've looked extensively.

Tejas quote was $15,500.  I looked at countless shops and have spent quite some time in this process.  I have flown all over the southeast to see work from several shops (some good and some bad!)...

I narrowed it to 3 shops and then really dug in...  I have to say that Mike and Chris have been great on the phone and even doing some sketch work on my design and that clinched the deal for me.  They were the most expensive of the 3, but based on what I have seen, I think that I'll be thrilled with the work.

FYI.. The other 2 shops were AOG (Mena, AR) and USA Aircraft Paint (Deland, FL).  I have seen both recent and old work from both shops and was impressed.

AOG is an excellent small shop, and Tejas is a superb shop that knows Mooney's well. Tough choice. It's very hard for me to grasp the 50% price difference between AOG and Tejas, however.

I went back and forth myself over the same issue  (the difference was really closer to 25% with my paint scheme).  The final sale for me was the service level from Tejas.  Dennis at AOG was very porfessional and nice when I spoke with him and I am sure that he would have done a great job on my plane.  After reading the paint info on www.n252q.com and watching Chris do the layout work in the photos, my decision was made up.  I also was impressed with the fact that all of the layout is by hand and not via stencil (I can appreciate a real craftsman doing highly skilled paint work).  I am confident that based on the work that I am doing, it will be completed to perfection.  I really liked it when Mike told me that they only do one kind of paint job, a perfect one.  I really can't forsee me getting rid of my Mooney any time, let alone soon.  So I look at it as more of an investment in my pride and happiness...

I've followed that blog for some time myself. Now I understand where you're getting some of your motivation from. His strong opinions, after much "research" and some wonderful explanations, are still that. An example is messing up the superb laminar flow Mooney wing with a bunch of little tabs. There is no meaningful data that they improve anything on a Mooney, it doesn't make common sense (at least to me), and they look like crap....yes, very subjective. As you said in your PM to me, internet "research" can be very misleading, so take it all with a grain of salt, especially in the short run.

It sounds like you're putting more $$$ into that M20G, than it cost you so it's great that you understand that your investment is in happiness, rather than financial return. Look forward to meeting you on the 14th.

No experience, but I'm pretty skeptical--they advertise extremely low prices for paint, interiors, and engine overhauls.  When someone's that much lower than the rest of the market, it makes you wonder...

Anyone who sinks well over twenty grand into a GPS, shouldn't be considering a cheap paint shop half way across the country. I've seen their work, have spoken to people who had to wait many months to get their planes back, and let's just say theiy aren't always "devine".

Maybe you should use them just so we can get another data point. Come to FL and use Hawk http://www.hawkaircraftpainting.com/ in Tampa. They do a fine job, and you can stay with me.
