tony Posted June 11, 2013 Report Posted June 11, 2013 Don't you just wish he would stay home. The size and duration of his TFRs are ridiculous. Quote
rob Posted June 11, 2013 Report Posted June 11, 2013 The size is the same as any Presidential TFR and 5 hours doesn't seem like a ridiculous length of time... Quote
fantom Posted June 11, 2013 Author Report Posted June 11, 2013 The size is the same as any Presidential TFR and 5 hours doesn't seem like a ridiculous length of time... It's not the length of time for all the trip TFR's, rather it's their cost and justification in the first place, especially when it's for fundraisers, campaigning, posturing, and other partisan endeavors. I hope the NSA isn't monitoring MooneySpace, or the IRS gets wind of my post, or the Justice Department has me in their cross hairs, or the ATF confiscates my legal firearms, or the State Department hangs me out and then covers it up. Not to worry, when our dollar/monetary system collapses, none of this will matter anyway. We are doomed. 3 Quote
Bill_Carter Posted June 11, 2013 Report Posted June 11, 2013 It costs AF1 180K an hour to fly. With that I could buy Parker's 252 and have gas money left over. BTW, that 180K doesn't include all of the other support the POTUS needs to do his thing. Quote

Marauder Posted June 11, 2013 Report Posted June 11, 2013 Well, I would take an occasional presidential visit over Joe's multiple visits up to KILG on a regular basis. Fortunately he is only worthy of a small TFR, but he sure likes to visit his home state. Quote
BorealOne Posted June 12, 2013 Report Posted June 12, 2013 This is all kind of funny from a Canadian perspective. A few years ago, I was in a small community (CYFS) with our Prime Minister. He was flying in a Herc (poor sod) on an Arctic tour, instead of his usual Canadair jet. No TFR whatsoever - in fact, I chatted with his security detail as I walked out onto the tarmac, admired the Herc and then fired up my plane and flew away... Quote
flyboy0681 Posted June 12, 2013 Report Posted June 12, 2013 In all fairness, let me remind all here that TFR's such as this came into vogue with GW Bush after 9/11. Quote
Bill_Carter Posted June 12, 2013 Report Posted June 12, 2013 Pres Clinton shut down an airport for hours to get a haircut. I don't think this started with Pres Obama or GW Bush. It may have worsened though after the 9/11 attacks. 1 Quote

It may have worsened though after the 9/11 attacks. Very much a true statement, and I lived in Los Angeles at the time. However, my home airport (Van Nuys) was not shut down, nor were any others in the area if I recall. Quote

flyboy0681 Posted June 12, 2013 Report Posted June 12, 2013 Still blaming Bush.... Had these presidential TFR's started under Clinton, I would have definitely blamed him, or Bush or Reagan or Carter.... Quote
FloridaMan Posted June 15, 2013 Report Posted June 15, 2013 My understanding was that the TFRs started after 9/11 to keep airplanes from loitering over sporting events. Someone somewhere thought it would be a good idea to create these long-term "No Fly Zones" for VIPs. I can understand temporary airspace, requiring that you're engaged with ATC and short term restrictions while the VIP is onboard the aircraft on the ground and during departure, but these long-term TFRs are unreasonable and, likely illegal, restrictions on our right to travel and I highly doubt that they would be effective in doing anything other than causing inconvenience. Seth Posted June 28, 2013 Report Posted June 28, 2013 Still blaming Bush.... I still remember Jay Leno freaking out with Clinton retiring because they wouldn't have any material. Then they were thrilled Bush was elected as they had material lined up for the next term - no problem at all. I love the SNL skits - "Stratgery" FOUND IT!! -Seth Quote
aaronk25 Posted June 28, 2013 Report Posted June 28, 2013 They should just keep some fighters in the air all tge time instead of using a TFR those guys log time regardless so might as well not inconvience the rest of us. Quote
NotarPilot Posted July 3, 2013 Report Posted July 3, 2013 They should just keep some fighters in the air all tge time instead of using a TFR those guys log time regardless so might as well not inconvience the rest of us. Yeah, if they pull the mixture way back on those F-16s and run LOP it shouldn't cost more than a few thousand dollars an hour to have those guys up there. Besides, it's not like we're not already spending an obscene amount of money already. Quote

We stand alert 24/7. Keeping us airborne 24/7 with live weapons would be very expensive. Quote
aaronk25 Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 I was half kidding but the military flys training missions all the time, just figure they could do more or less airborne ones in place of a active tfr but what do I know.........just a conservative from MN. I suppose live Wepons can't be on most training missions. Quote

Yeah, I can see the plot now. They disassemble an F-16 and put into shipping containers. Then they sneak it into the country and assemble it in a big hangar on a farm in rural New Jersey or something. Then they get one shot at the president on a suicide mission. What could possibly go wrong? ...or, they just rent one from a cash strapped Mexican Air Force. Quote
stevesm20b Posted July 15, 2013 Report Posted July 15, 2013 It cost us tax payers nearly 100 million for Obamas trip to Africa. Obama has spent more money on his trips and vacations in his first term in office than all the presidents before him combined. Quote
flyboy0681 Posted July 15, 2013 Report Posted July 15, 2013 It cost us tax payers nearly 100 million for Obamas trip to Africa. Obama has spent more money on his trips and vacations in his first term in office than all the presidents before him combined. Let's be fair, all presidents do a substantial amount of travel. According to this link, Obama doesn't even come close to the top of the list for foreign travel by a president. As highlighted, there have been three president's that actually made around the world trips, Johnson, Nixon and G.W.Bush. While the cost of Obama's latest trip can certainly be a point of contention (and from what I have read, the $100m price tag was greatly exaggerated, most estimates place it at $65m), the cost is not due to the man but the machinery. Unless the next president is a complete recluse, the costs will be considerably higher. Who here remembers that George and Laura Bush (and daughters) made seven trips to Africa - all courtesy of the American taxpayer. Didn't think so. Lastly, let's also keep in mind that Bush 43 still holds the record for vacation for a sitting president - 1,020 days during 8 years in office, followed by Reagan. Obama is nowhere near that and the president who took the least? Carter. This is not an attempt at Bush bashing but fairness. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_international_trips_made_by_the_President_of_the_United_States 1 Quote
