Well I have been flying with the "new to me" equipment in my old Mooney for awhile now and I have one regret, I should have replaced the xponder. I have a KT-76A and it works fine but I need a new timer and the newer units have one not to mention other neat things. I priced a good clock and they go anywhere from 100$ up to almost 500$ plus install, but they do lots of things other than keep time, however, most of the new transponders keep time as well and why put another device in the panel when I could put the money into a transponder and get much more function per dollar. I currently have a G430waas,SL30,KN64 and the KT76A. Was reading on the new transponders and just wondering other may have, looks like some of them provide info to the 400/500 series Garmins, and have ADS-B functions.

I have a GTX300ES tied into a GNS430W and absolutely love the combo! I fly in and around Class B airspace all the time and having the capability to see what ATC sees is really a nice feature. Little stuff like auto on based on airspeed is feature I really enjoy. Unless I have to set a squawk value I don't ever have to worry about taking it out of standby... Has me pretty spoiled.

Typing in the 4 digit code would be nice. Dialing in the code on four different knobs is painful in comparison.

A readout of the altitude encoder is a nice touch.

Still wanting those panel shots 888. We have been waiting (unless failure) on transponder update until ADS-B gets settled and prices come down. It is hard not to want to upgrade with all the nice functionality/integration features of updated avionics....fun stuff if you have AMU's to play with.

I installed a GTX-330ES a few years ago as well when my KT-76 (not -76A!) died, otherwise I would've kept on flying it since everything is still changing right now and competitors are emerging.  I'd install a nice clock on the far left side of your panel and keep flying until the KT-76A gives you a reason to upgrade.  By then who knows what will be available and/or required.  I have a Davtron 811b and really like it, except setting it is a PITA.  I also have a Davtron 655 multifunction OAT gauge that is tied to my encoder and shows pressure & density altitudes, as well as OAT and Voltage.  Very nice little box.

I've read a discussion somewhere about weather the clock in the transponder meets the IFR requirement for a clock. There wasn't agreement on that, but there never is or forums like this would be boring.

Can't speak to transponders with clocks in them, but can speak highly of the Davtron chronometer I have in my plane. I think the model is M870, simple to use, has count down/up capabilities, UTC, local time and flight timers. Simple to install into a 2 1/4 hole.

What is the FAR regarding clocks?

My recollection is quite old included the second hand...my wind up was acceptable for it's time. My current one came with the plane.

My iPad provides a better solution than the panel or yoke mounted ones....

Looking forward to your interpretations.

I thnk Avidyne has a slide in repalcment for the 76A you might want to check with them as well.

I think that avidyne transponder is a rebadged trig tt31 but its 8 grand instead of 4
