I need a couple destination idea's to spend a day with my two kids and my nephew. 7, 9 & 13

I am based at KLBE and would like to spend 1 to 2 hours of flight time (each way). Looking for either an educational destination or even a fun filled day. Obviously for me the fun would be the flight but for them I'm looking for something to occupy the day. Wife wants the house to herself to clean up after the Christmas extravaganza.

A copule options I was thinking of was:

1. KERI (indoor water parks)

2. K??? (Washington, DC) but not sure what airport would be easiest to access the sights?

3. KLUK (Creation Museum)

4. KTEB (New York City)

Ideas would be most appreciated.

How about a nice life lesson simulation of collaborative sociopolitical operational micro economics... in other words make them wash your airplane.

Great call putting the little people to work on the hard to reach places! You're a modern day warrior, today's Tom sawyer.

In that case, why not fly into KHPN and take Metro North into the city. Take those hard workers to the Museum of Natural History to learn a bit about the world. If you come on a day when I'm available, maybe I'll even join yous and show you around.

Brett,

How about Luray Caverns at KLUA? They'll pick up up at the airport.

It would seem NYC, or even DCA, is too far from KLBE with travel time to/from the airport--any airport--plus too much to see for one day, especially in the winter.

Less is more.

oooh - Luray Caverns is awesome - I went there when I was a cub scout many Moons ago. Big thumbs up from my own 10 year old memory.

When the weather is good, KFFA. Wright Brothers museum within walking distance. Luray is also an excellent choice and will make a memorable trip for the kids. I remember when my Dad flew me there 35 years ago.

The Mariner's Museum in Newport News, VA would be interesting for young folks. Also, visits to nearby Williamsburg and Yorktown are worthwhile. You can land at the Newport International airport but I prefer little Williamsburg Airport JGG. It has a great restaurant, and would be a good base of ops for a several day visit to the area. Many types of accomodation are available. The Williamsburg Inn is the most impressive.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I think I am sold on Luray caverns and the first chance I get with decent weather/schedule permitting, I'm gonna get the little ones there. I had never heard of them before so I am just as excited to check them out also. I am still open for suggestions for future trips, so if anybody comes up with anything else, I sure would like to hear of them. Always looking for an excuse to sneak away especially being able to utilize the airplane.

KLUA is one of the prettiest airports around. A throwback to the golden age of flight. And the flight through the mountains is really pretty. The area just had snow, so the flight will be absolutely gorgeous. I personally find the caverns ok, but not great. A little too much of a tourist trap for my taste. But i'm definitely in the minority as most people enjoy the caverns. Since you will be flying near or even in the SFRA, don't forget to take the online course before you go.

I know you were asking for ideas around Christmas, but if you find a particularly warm day, check out Ocean City, MD (KOXB). It is a short drive from the airport to Assateague Island National Seashore. Beside the obvious spend the day at the beach, there is also crabbing, canoeing, nature trails, and looking at wild ponies. You don't really need to go in the summer, but it is an outdoor activity. OXB has inexpensive gas and rental cars are usually $25/day if you negotiate. Maybe less during the off-season. They charge a parking fee of $6/day but will wave the fee for 10 gallons of full service gas ... which is exactly $6 more than the self-service price. Even at full serve, the low cost of gas makes the parking a non-issue.

If you are interested in skiing/snow tubing you can check out Sky Bryce (VG18) which is just west of KLUA. But check your aircraft performance specs as the field is about 2200 ft long and surrounded by trees. If you can get in/out the field is a short walk to the ski resort.

Some other ideas:

KIAD ... Udvar Hazy Smithsonian Air-Space museum .. See the Space Shuttle

KWWD ... Wildwood/Cape May

Have fun!
