tradin1 Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 the GF and i wanted to get away next week and wanted to go somewhere where we could stay in a cabin or nice house on a lake somewhere that i could fly us too. i would appreciate any opinions, as i am leary of just booking it sight unseen or without a solid recomendation. it would be great if i could fly right in, but not a prob if there is a small drive if i can rent a car from the FBO. i considered Big Bear, CA but that would be 5 hours ete. thx chris Quote
jetdriven Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 Gaston's. Up in Arkansas. 2.5 hours in a Mooney from Dallas. They got their own airstrip too. http://www.gastons.com/airstrip.php http://www.gastons.com/cottages.php Quote
kerry Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 There's the mooney mile high club. I'm sorry thats probably wrong for me to say, but I couldn't resist when I saw your post title. Quote
OR75 Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 Cedar Mills on Lake Texoma ? Never been but heard it was nice turf runway and nice resort Quote
Newmooneyguy Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 Port Aransas, Mustang Beach Airport. Good restaurant next to the airport, free shuttle to town. Lake is large but quite salty. Quote
andysmith11 Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 Couple of places you could try ~ hour from Dallas: Horseshoe Bay - you mentioned a cabin/house on the lake. If you are willing to consider a hotel, there is a Marriott there. If you are staying at the Marriott, HSB has a private airport, DZB, and transportation will take you to the hotel. You can also arrange a rental car through Enterprise if you want transportation. Alternatively, if you rent a house or condo through VRBO or some other avenue, you can fly in to Burnet, BMQ. Not sure what the rental car situation is there. Worst case, you fly in to AUS and pick up a rental car there. It is about a 45 minute drive to HSB from the Airport. Other hotel recommendation is Lakeway Resort and Spa, although it is a hotel, not house/cabin. You can fly in to Lakeway Airpark. The hotel has a shuttle and will pick you up. The shuttle will also take you to area restaurants. Last thought is a place on Lake Travis. You could fly in to AUS and pick up a rental car there. Quote

231flyer Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 I highly recommend Lakeway Airport (or Lago Vista) and the Barton Creek Resort or the Lakeway Resort. My wife and I went to UT so I am more than a little biased. Our first date was at the Oasis Restaurant on Lake Travis (26 years ago), a sunset dinner remains one of the most romantic. Lots of artsy stuff to do in the Hill country and 6th Street is just a quick drive away. Enterprise Rental will drop off at Lakeway or you can always fly into KEDC for full service (my fav GA airport). For sun-n-fun the Corpus area is hard to beat for proximity. Mustang Island airport is nice but very limited services. Galveston is reasonable but a little crowded for my liking. We did a nice trip to Lajitas Resort in Big Bend last year. Great views and a rafting trip down the Rio Grande is a must. Just Beautiful vistas all around and LaJitas has its own airport or you can fly into Alpine and rent a car. We are flying to Lubbock this w/e to see the Solar Eclipse. Lots of stuff to do in the area if you like the Canyonland. Quote

smccray Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 I can't speak from personal experience, but I've heard from others that they've had better experiences at Cibolo Creek Ranch (http://cibolocreekranch.com/) as a fly-in destination versus Lajitas. I've been told that fees at Lajitas can get expensive. We're planning a weekend at Cibolo Creek Ranch at some point. Quote
231flyer Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 Lajitas Resort tries to be all inclusive (captive) but reasonably priced so we will return. We really enjoyed their amenities and loved the very quaint Terlingua town next door(15 miles). Next time we plan to spend a night inside Big Bend at the park lodge. We are thinking of late fall (Sept/Oct) given temps. Both Alpine and Marfa are quite a distance from the Park, Presidio (T77) is closer but has limited services. Since my girls graduated from Indian Princesses, our camping adventure is limited to Sun-N-Fun/Oshkosh - I like showers/flushing toilets. Quote

moodychief Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 Hot springs, AR. Or fly into Rogers, AR, rent a car and go to Eureka Springs, AR. NW Arkansas also has a large cat sanctuary that has cabins. You can hear the big cats during the night. Or Petit Jean State Park, AR has campground for fly-in guests and they may have a lodge as well. Memorial Day weekend, Little Rock has their Riverfest that includes a lot of concerts. Get a room at the Peabody overlooking the river. Quote
kris_adams Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 +1 for Gaston's. Check it out on Youtube. Quote
Txbyker Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 Fredricksburg (T82) then go across the street to the Cotton Gin. Rent a cabin which is really some upscale replica versions all centered around a courtyard and very nice restaurant. $$$$ on the Mooney scale. http://www.cottonginlodging.com/ Quote

Z W Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 Lake of the Ozarks. Tons of lodging options. Three airports - h21, k15, KAIZ. About 2.5 hours from KDFW at Mooney speeds. Recommend the Lodge of the Four Seasons. Quote
