Currently running an overhauled ALY-8520(R), which appears to be on its last legs. Considering a replacement of both the alternator and the voltage regulator, presently the original OECO. Two questions for the community:

* Is there a benefit in changing from ALY-8520(R) to AL12-P70? I can find the former model as an overhauled unit, and the latter as either OH or new.

* I am given to understand that Zeftronics R1530B is a better "match" for ALY-8520, and the Plane Power R1224 a better "match" for the AL12-P70. Is this correct?

Hi, I have my old generator and regulator in a box.  I replaced with plane-power alternator and regulator in the first few months that I owned my 1964 M20E about six years ago.  It was all working fine, I just wanted to start upgrading the plane and this was one of the first things that I did.  I'll give these to you free if you want to pay for shipping. I live in Indiana and that old generator is a heavy slug, so I have no idea how much it would cost to ship.

Let me know if you are interested.  I don't check MooneySpace every night but I usually do 2 or 3 times a week.

Thank you Mark, you are very kind. I will gather a bit more information and come back to you. What model alternator and VR did you end up installing?

I installed Plane Power alternator and regulator in my 65E (under supervision of A&P/IA of course) and it works very well. Their customer service was fantastic as well.

One of my friends at the airport one an alternator from plane power. They ended up giving me the certificate for the conversion kit. Plain power sent me an alternator for my 1964 m20e. What part numbers did you install and could you send me pictures of your install? Thanks

Just curious, what symptoms are indicating that your alt/reg "appears to be on its last legs"?

Exhibit A vs. Exhibit B..

I'd check all the wiring for poor connections before spending money on parts.

The way the traces look it smacks of an intermittent electrical connection. Maybe the field wire; it opens and the alternator output is going to go to zero and the battery is going to supply the load current (the -22 Amps), then it comes back and the current stabilizes at around 10 Amps after initial spikes to 25-30 Amps.

Can also be worn brushes.  Easy to replace.
