Is this prop legal for my M20E?

I don't know how to find out what props are legal to install on what planes, hence my question. I found a used, newly overhauled McCauley B2D34C214-B/G-90DHB-16E two blade prop and was thinking of buying it to replace my McCauley 3 blade prop that I have on now -- in order to get back about 20lbs of forward weight and get a couple knots of speed back.

Is this prop legal to install on my 1970 M20E? How can I find out for sure?

A related question. How much could I realistically hope to get for my McCauley 3 blade prop if I try to resell it? It is in good condition, not leaking any grease, new about 800 hours ago (I can look up the exact numbers).

The Mooney TCDS is what says what is legal on a certified plane.   It is on the FAA website.   After that you are on the manufacture's website looking for a STC.

It depends on your engine.  According to the McCauley website, that prop is approved for your airplane if you have the IO-360-A3B6 engine.

The TCDS is again the authoritative reference, since the IO-360-A3B6 engine is only approved for the M20J.    That McCauley prop is listed in the TCDS for the M20J, but not for the M20E, probably since it has a different engine.

The TCDS does not list that McCauley prop for an M20E, in fact it only indicates two models of Hartzell propeller.    Anything else would require an STC or a field approval.

BTW, the TCDS for the Mooney M20 is 2A3.    I think Rev 58 may be the latest.

Yes, I got as far as looking at the TCDS and I did see it only lists the Hartzells for the E. But I do not know where to look for STCs.

I think I figured it out by talking to the McCauley people. @EricJ was right, that propeller is only STCed for the -A3B6 engine, which is the one in the J model but not in my E. That ends it -- that prop won't work on my plane.

No, only a 3 blade, but it is lighter and smoother than any of the 2 blade metal props.

Even if they did, I couldn't afford it. A new prop is probably in the $15k range or more (haven't look at MT), so it would be a $12-13k expenditure after I sell my current 3-blade Mac. I can't justify that just for a few knots and pounds. My prop is just fine as it is. That prop I was looking at was around $5k, freshly overhauled.

I priced an MT for my 252 about a year ago.

$16300 for the prop, assembly (ships from Germany in pieces), install, and balancing.

When you are looking at a "freshly overhauled" prop, dig a little deeper.  Check to see how many times it has been overhauled and what shop did the last OH.  Each time it is overhauled, you lose some of the blade due to re-contouring.  Just like engines, there are good OH and some that are marginal.  You would hate to get a different prop only have the next prop shop tell you that the blades need to be replaced.

Even if they overhaul YOUR prop and return it, the next overhaul make it go below the limits.

Better to have the prop IRANed.  They inspect and fix things that need to be fixed and don't grind the blades unless it is needed due to nicks.
