Derrickearly Posted July 31 Report Posted July 31 Looking for ideas on installing my fire extinguisher. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F5CK0S0?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details Quote
00-Negative Posted July 31 Report Posted July 31 I bought 2 of the Element fire extinguishers. My plane did not have an extinguisher when I bought it. Everything I have read on this product convinces me it is a superior extinguisher. I just need someone to waste the money on one and test it for me. I mounted one under the instrument panel on top of the nose gear cover that I can easily reach while flying. The other is in the back seat pocket. My AP/IA saw it during annual and wanted one, so I gifted him one when we were done with the annual. https://www.amazon.com/Element-Extinguisher-UTVDISTRIBUTION-Mounting-Magnet/dp/B0C1WMGBNQ/ref=sxts_b2b_sx_reorder_acb_customer?content-id=amzn1.sym.f63a3b0b-3a29-4a8e-8430-073528fe007f%3Aamzn1.sym.f63a3b0b-3a29-4a8e-8430-073528fe007f&crid=KWN2QRCUXBIY&cv_ct_cx=element%2Bfire%2Bextinguisher&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.LHO8B7K0HWzEXQNQ7A-56A.nHFwWyW2jhhZAY3QRMwLyGgojS9QkBjgeW9E489yBHI&dib_tag=se&keywords=element%2Bfire%2Bextinguisher&pd_rd_i=B0C1WMGBNQ&pd_rd_r=23bc7d51-3e30-4238-9ea3-a98997dc97c5&pd_rd_w=UYxUa&pd_rd_wg=MVnb9&pf_rd_p=f63a3b0b-3a29-4a8e-8430-073528fe007f&pf_rd_r=6QNETKMMJY0Y6S6HH85Y&qid=1722448744&sbo=RZvfv%2F%2FHxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D&sprefix=element%2Bfire%2Caps%2C168&sr=1-1-9f062ed5-8905-4cb9-ad7c-6ce62808241a&th=1 - David 1 Quote

The only drawback is you can't shut them off like a traditional extinguisher, and they discharge for 50 seconds. In flight, I guess you could point them out the pilot's window ;-). I don't know if the FAA would consider these a legitimate replacement, either. So, I kept my traditional extinguisher in the cabin as well, and I expect these would be best for ground fires. 1 Quote
EricJ Posted July 31 Report Posted July 31 I'd think an Element would be a problem in a small enclosed cabin. They're great for a lot of applications, but not in small, closed quarters. 1 Quote
A64Pilot Posted August 1 Report Posted August 1 What is the extinguishing agent? As far as I know we have no requirement for an extinguisher, so my opinion is unless it posed some kind of hazard the FAA wouldn’t care. Quote
Pinecone Posted August 2 Report Posted August 2 FYI, I contacted Element about use in a small, enclosed space. Here is their response. I have replied and asked about what about if you can't egress immediately
Yes, Element is safe to use in enclosed spaces and allows the occupants to breathe. Having said this, exposure should be limited to the bare minimum since the extinguishing gas obscures visibility and is not pleasant to breathe. The idea is to allow for safe egress from the area of a fire as promptly as possible.
Quote
Pinecone Posted August 2 Report Posted August 2 I got a very quick response from Element. Impressive customer service. Here is their reply. Regarding your proposed use case, although aviation is not normally our area of expertise, I can offer the following observations. Our extinguisher generates a dense extinguishing smoke that, while breathable, is not pleasant. More importantly the discharge from the extinguisher is designed to hang in the air and severely obstructs visibility. These are 2 things which I would imagine are not particularly desirable in the confines of an airplane cockpit, particularly one functioning under VFR conditions. This perhaps is not an issue if you have a means of rapid air exchange in the airplane once the fire is out but, otherwise it would be problematic. On the plus side, the extinguishing gas does not make a mess or damage electronics the way a normal ABC extinguisher does. Unfortunately, in an airplane there are no ideal options, just less compromised ones. Quote

However, it does seem problematic… no extinguisher (or fire) is going to be good in a tiny cockpit, but i think it’s helpful if you can stop it when you want instead of just waiting until it runs out. 1 Quote

00-Negative Posted August 2 Report Posted August 2 Okay. My bubble is officially burst. I will immediately revise the fire safety protocol aboard N2586W "El Delorean". I'm taking that crap out of my plane and I'll find somewhere to mount a real fire extinguisher. Thanks for the info. -David Quote

Marc_B Posted August 3 Report Posted August 3 This was an accident. They used the wrong Element. This was the element Oxygen that’s for augmenting fires, breathing and escalating rust! 1 1 Quote
Pinecone Posted August 3 Report Posted August 3 I still think the best for aircraft cockpit use is Halon with Halotron as a second possibility. I might consider carrying an Element or to in case of fire on the ramp. Mine or someone else. Quote
201Steve Posted August 4 Report Posted August 4 Extinguish fire, throw stick out the pilot window, leave it open for venting? Quote
Pinecone Posted August 5 Report Posted August 5 How will you know the fire is out if it is 0-0 in the cockpit? 1 2 Quote
