Just kidding. She's all done tho. A few flaws here and there that I'll have to buff and airbrush but overall I'm pretty proud of what I accomplished by myself. It was a monumental task but I'm still happy I did it.

That is very impressive!   Please say you took a bunch of pictures and have a big write-up for us!

I have a gallery I put on here, not sure how to get to them tho. One day I'll but something together but I am not a pictures person. My wife is like the paparazzi and it was really hard for me to remember to take pictures along the way. She avoided helping on this project at all cost lol

What an accomplishment!  My only question is, would you do it again?  That is my big test after I complete a DIY task!

Would I still go back and do this if I knew what it took? Yeah, It was something I really wanted to do. Would I do another airplane? Hell no... but then again, I wanna build a skybolt and I'll probably paint that one. But that will be 5+ years down the road.

Sounds like me!  5 years from now you'll forget all the pain and anguish of paint prep and do it again on the Skybolt.  :)

Where did you do it?  Your own hangar I presume... is it yours, or a muni t-hangar?  How did you protect from dust & debris, what did you do for airflow, lights, etc.  I'd love to learn the details, even though I have no plans to do that myself.  In fact, I'm delivering mine tomorrow to the shop for them to do it.  Later I will have some touch-up after my smooth belly conversion and I might try that myself, but who knows.

I did it in my regular box hangar, several guys have done the same out here. We actually have quite a few builders and some that have won first place at oshkosh.

Basically I hung plastic and setup a ventilation system. There is still some dirt in the paint but now that I've painted and have started closely inspecting, everyone has dirt in their paint. Unless you are dropping 25k on your paint job you probably have dirt in your paint. Even some of those do too. Once you paint you see everything in everyone's paint job

All said an done with a jet glo conventional system it was 7k or so, this includes paying nephews for labor and buying so much stuff you never thought you needed. I scrubbed so much light surface corrosion off the plane with scotch brite pads and what not. I'd invest in them before their profit is published... BUT at the end of the day I didn't trust a cheaper place would clean the metal to the detail level I wanted and I didn't want to spend the 25k and wonder if they did it all correctly either. As someone that spends millions on contractors every year I have trust issues on quality anymore.

I never painted anything in my life with a spray gun, just several years of art school and supposedly I'm an artist of sorts. The painting wasn't that hard till I did the white. That got a little overwhelming. Sherwin Williams was an epic pain in the ass and I'll never use them ever again. There was one dude named Fernando that was a huge help but the entire rest of the organization was worthless. I could write a book on what I'd do different knowing what I know now. It's not that anything I did was wrong, there are just so many more ways that are easier.

Overall lots of long nights. Wake up at 5am, go to work and go straight to the hangar after. Work till 10ish and go to bed. that was my life since December. I'm a grinder so as wore out as I was with my wife telling me to take a break I kept going till it was done. Now I plan to fly and work on my golf swing. I'll be doing the interior next winter and a panel sometime down the road if I don't move on to faster planes.
