Now that I finished my helicopter cfi thinking about my next rating and I’m kind of running out. Maybe add helicopter to my cfii or maybe weight shift?? Would like to do ppc but only a few schools in the US (I own a 103 ppc).  
 

my dpe was pushing the cfii. Claims it’s just one approach in a helicopter to add on.

I actually don’t but the dpe says it’s easy to do them together. He’s really trying to get helicopter cfii’s with instrument experience. I’ve never yet met a helicopter cfii who’s been in a cloud

For those in the airplane world you’ll be surprised to hear that for helicopters instrument rating is an insurance thing but almost no 135 operators are allowed to file ifr. Insurance wants the rating but pilots never fly it. It’s odd. But the result is all these cfii’s who’ve never been in Imc.

Commercial glider?

I would never even have thought that was even a thing…  
Are there commercial glider ops?

It was mostly the same to do glider at the commercial level vs private. So I could legally do glider rides.

Then I would do them both.  I did the writtens for both, but never pursued the rating.

Of course, max bang for the buck is to do one new rating every 2 years to count as a Flight Review.

WTF?!.  The regs state what is required.  DPE doesn't make the regs.

Lots of commercial heli operatations are in low ceiling/visibility conditions. Class G Basic VFR for helicopters is 1 mile / clear of clouds. Ask Kobe

Maybe you have all the ratings that make sense.  Just step sideways into the wide-wide world of type ratings.

Used to be able to do it in San Francisco years ago. They’d actually do 4-5 students at a time for the checkride. 
I believe the only company that has the ability to do it now is Goodyear.

Been around Aviation for enough decades that I know what a small world it is and making friends works better than enemies

Airship international operates more blimps than Goodyear. FWIW.

Back in the late 80s before they built the north hangars at KDVT, the Goodyear blimp was moored where the north hangars are now. I had my Mooney there at the time. A friend of mine called and asked if we could get to the blimp. I said, “I think so” so he said “let’s do it”. So we drove around the runway on the service road and got to the blimp. We started checking it out when this 50 something black dude comes over and says Hi and asks if we like his blimp? We told him we did. It turns out he was the crew chief for that blimp. He proceeds to show us everything about that blimp. I asked him if he was licensed to fly it. He says he is and flies it regularly on maintenance test flights. So of course we ask him if we can go flying? He says “let me see” he walked over to the trailers where the ground crew lives. He came back and said “Sorry, we can’t go flying the ground crew already started drinking” so sad…

But he let me start the engines, inflate the front balloonays, turn the pitch wheel all the way down, go to about 40% power on the two IO360s which raised the gondola off the ground and use the rudder peddles to pivot it 45 degrees clockwise around the mooring mast and then 45 degrees the order way, then move it back into the wind and set it back down. WAY TOO COOL!

 Very few helicopters are certified for ifr flight. Legally requires more equipment than airplanes. Even less operators are cerified for it (Kobe’s 135 we not).  The instrument rating in the helicopter world is mostly academic, very rare to actually use.

Yesterday I landed in Elko NV and there were 5 Blackhawk’s sitting there. The crews were in the FBO. I asked one of the pilots where they were headed? He said Boise, we are going to fly in the clouds and see if the anti ice works…

They must be military. We have 4 Blackhawks we use for firefighting and the first thing they do is rip all the instruments out and all the armor. They charge by the pound for what they carry so extra weight is lost money. Mostly we use them for fire water buckets and carry parts. Not legal to carry passengers since the faa cert is “limited” category. Have a Huey for taking people to fires. I really want to get a ride in that!!!

Astronaut - nothing like a space capsule pilot rating! Given that you can fly just about everything else (please excuse the pun), why not reach for the stars?
