Wasn't it 201 mph rather than knots that inspired the name?

Yes it was. MPH to Knots happened later.

The claim was "the first production piston single to reach 200 mph with only 200 hp!" [I think]

But that’s only 175 knots! I can get pretty close to that any day!

KTAS? Tailwind doesn't count.

I've had groundspeed of 186 knots in level cruise my C, and been 200+ in descent. Easy peasy!

With all the mods/improvements I have done, I can make about 170KTAS (based on ASI which I have found to be fairly accurate) at full power. This isn’t quite full power but nor is it full weight either.

I saw a recent pic of their plane that resembled a spaghetti accident.

He doesn’t want to get my rigging perfect because he’s afraid my 201 might be 201er than his.

Finally managed to get 201 out of my M20J

I'll accuse you of deliberately slowing down to hit the 201 :)

A real downgrade from the Mite, which is supposed to go 125MPH on only 65 HP.

That's impressive!  What improvements?

Composite gear doors, new[er] cowl, remove unused antennas/equipment, door pin mod, gap seals, body work and A pillar smoothing, windshield fairing replacement, repaint, wash, and wax.

Some of those I understand, but I don't know others.  I'll have to fire up Google.

How many HP would it take to go 400 MPH?

TBM 900 claims top speed of 380mph on 850HP

Oh it's far worse

More than a Comanche 400 has . . . . . Sorry, Doc!

So, not very linear.

The power required to overcome aerodynamic drag goes up with the square of the speed.    So, yes, not linear.  ;)

Nope, square function.  Basically, you need 4 times the power to double the speed as a start.  This is why drag reduction is a much easier way to go fast.

What in the tarnation are you doing to get that fast?!? I can't get anywhere near that and I have the exact same plane? Is there something wrong with my plane? Flat level no cheating at the optimal elevation I can squeeze 160 kts about. Granted I've never been taught how to properly speed manage a money and have learned from figuring it out, still I don't feel like there is anywhere in the rpm prop combo that could get me to 170kts
