Garmin gtn 750

My 750 unit is ten years old and I made an inquiry into a local shop for the cost of replacement:

If GTN has Mod 6 or below the flat rate is $400.00
If the GTN had Mod 7 or above and needs the low-capacity battery the flat rate is $800.00

Is there a physical difference to the 750 up to Mod 6 and then after Mod 7?  It makes no sense that it would take any more time to swap out a battery unless Garmin made major physical changes that takes more time for the shop to get to the battery.  Which really brings up the question of why a part that has a expected expiration date would not be readily accessible.

I've seen a few AC access panel that were buried against the wall.  The staff said it took the service guys 2-3 times longer for regular service.  They pretty much shut down if there was a real issue.

Spicy...$35 for a $3 1/2 AA?  Are they "aviation grade" or something similarly branded?

 

They're a common enough battery.  I buy them in 10 packs for the probes on my CNC machines and we go through 4 of them on each machine about every 6 months.  The pack runs about $30 delivered to my front door.

Garmin has no fear of crossing the line. 

 

This Battery replacement is just another example of behaving like a Corporate bullie in the Sand Box of Aviation !!!

Actually it is a great strategy of “mark up to make a sustainable profit”. Otherwise you won’t remain in business…something that Radio Shack didn’t learn.

Batteries are a tiny part of Garmin's business.

Batteries were a lost leader for Radio Shack.  Come in for cheap batteries, buy other stuff.

IMO, Garmin would be better specifying a standard battery and let the shops get them on the open market.
