I just read an General Aviation News article this morning that sparked me once again.  Have we all gotten use to and just accepted loss of our aibility to get to our own airplanes at our TSA 8G directive affected general aviation airports?  Have we rolled over and just taken it?  I haven't!! I continue to write letters to govt. officials, AOPA and anyone else I feel can help with this beyond ridiculous action!

Unfortunately, each airport that is affected by TSA 8G has the ability to decide how it can implement this directive.  Our local airports have gone beyond common sense, if 8G has any common sense to it at all.

Instead of securing the specific areas that are accessed by commercial airline flights, our folks decided to encompass the entire airport perimeter.  Therefore, access codes were removed from all pedestrian gates, preventing access to our airplanes.  In other words, if you travel into these airports and leave the premise, you cannot get back to your airplane without a restaurant waitress, FBO representative or some other ridiculous authority letting you in.  The serious problem comes into play if you try to return to your airplane after all these folks have gone home for the night!

Here's the other pathetic issue with 8G.  Some 35 years ago, I required an FBI background check to access my work location at a military base.  Today, I need an FBI background check to get to my private aircraft at my airport.  How's that for progress in freedom?

Additionally, these FBI background check access badges are airport specific.  It would have made much more sense to at least make the badges non-airport specific so they could be used at any TSA 8G airport across this country.

We are victims of an overzealous government action that protects no one.  It merely serves to make it extremely difficult for honest folks to get to their own personal property.  If a terrorist desires to access a certain point on our local GA [now TSA 8g encumbered] airport, a little 6 foot chain link fence with a FBI access card reader is certainly not going to stop them!

I agree with you too much Gov’t intervention.  All show for little or no gain.” He who gives up freedom for safety deserves neither” Ben Franklin

That being said is this enacted as law, regulations or what?

Be careful they're watching :-))

Too make things worse my home airport is looking to make things worse.

I received a message this morning from a fellow pilot friend stating " I don't got to those airports anymore".

What does that bring to the promotion and longevity to businesses on these airports that support our general aviation habbits?  The answer to that is quite clear!

A perfect example of the restrictive nature of the this 8G directive is representated by the recent uprising at Grand Junction, CO airport.

If you wish to read the reality the Grand Junction folks are  faced with:  http://www.gjsentinel.com/news/articles/airport_users_fume_about_secur/

Postive moves being made at Grand Junction!  The local GJT pilots are not standing back and accepting the overzealous 8G restrictions without a fight, and a good one I might add!

The short blurb in our July AOPA Pilot magazine is titled "Victory in Colorado".  This is only a small part of their story and doesn't do justice to the long hard battle they are waging.  Should they succeed, and I believe they will, the TSA badge issues for the general aviation hangar and transient parking areas will disappear!!

Imagine that!  Being able to get to your airplane again without the permission of a cocktail waitress.............

The GJT fight and its eventual success will be a huge precedent for all of us that wish to follow suit.

That sounds like good news.  I sure wish we had a time machine to go back and prevent the TSA from existing...they're just another out-of-control bureaucracy solving problems that don't exist to justify their extremely bloated budget and excessive number of employees.

If my plane that I rightfully own was at an airport with a chain link fence..... and I couldnt get in... I'd just jump the damn fence and take off.

We must fight! This is excellent news, thank you, Mitch (and Jolie). I sign and forward every petition you post, because I don't want to take this lying down. Pet-Peeve alert: Over regulation is killing entrepreneurship and manufacturing in this country by increasing the cost of doing business. Anything we can do to reverse that trend will benefit everyone.

I am also unhinged about Govt regulations such as this new FAA crap.  Therefore, instead of spinning my wheels trying fight every new daily regulation that springs forth from every single administration office one-by-one, I came up with a solution that would combat ALL regulations from every agency. My idea is simple.  We need to REGULATE THE REGULATORS...How about asking your representatives to wite a Bill that states:

"For every NEW regulation that is passed by any agency of the Federal Government, TWO existing ones must be removed from the Federal Register"

It's my humble idea, but dang, this WOULD work.  After this regulation on the regulators is implemented, we could apply this philosophy to all new LAWS, TAXES, PROGRAMS, AGENCIES, TOLLS, FEES etc.

Government is out of control and attacks our personal freedoms every day.  I am tired of it.  I don't have any inside contacts to make this work, but if any of you do.... Please contact your representative and get my idea going.  I can't do it by myself.

I strongly agree with many comments posted, unfortunately we are a small minority as aircraft owners. We need to push back as much as possible with misguided regulation. I will admit though, favoring smaller airports without scheduled air service when I go somewhere. I want easy in - easy out.
