Mcstealth Posted April 5, 2022 Report Posted April 5, 2022 On a short XC in the Darter, I watched a small jet cross my path, right to left at a similar altitude, 1000ft or so in front of me. What device is best that Bluetooth to a tablet, so I see this kind of traffic? Quote
Tahir K Posted April 5, 2022 Report Posted April 5, 2022 I own and use a Stratus 3 device on every flight. It connects via Wi-fi (better in my opinion so that you can still connect to an audio panel or headset via Bluetooth). The Stratus 3 allows you to see ADSB traffic as well as ADSB weather. There are other options aside from the stratus such as Garmin's GDL series or sentry ADSB that accomplish similar tasks! 1 Quote
PeteMc Posted April 5, 2022 Report Posted April 5, 2022 There are a few different options out there. Take a look at Sporty's, Amazon or any of the other places you can buy an "ADS-B Receiver." Once you've read up a bit, go watch some of the videos. I have a DUAL XGPS-190 that I used before my GTX-345 transponder. Now I keep it as a backup or for when I fly with friends. A lot of people like the Sentry and there is even a version with a CO2 Detector. It's not a huge market with hundreds of choices, but there are options for you to consider. 1 Quote

That’s really crazy, not many jets flying around out there vfr, how do you suppose the two of you got that close? When I got my ppl, I was in a pos Cessna trainer where nothing really worked. when I got my Mooney and adsb in I was shocked at all the traffic you don’t see. a stratus is a great backup and I bring it whenever I fly, regardless whose plane I’m in. I wouldn’t own a plane without traffic of some kind, and would even prefer active traffic, but 25k is a hard pill to swallow. The 8k for the 345 was the best money ive ever spent on my plane. 2 Quote
HIghpockets Posted April 6, 2022 Report Posted April 6, 2022 I would agree with the above advice. As a sidebar, I don't know anything about the density of air traffic in Texas, but here in the East Coast I regularly get flight following. For me it's cheap insurance. 3 Quote
carusoam Posted April 6, 2022 Report Posted April 6, 2022 A portable ADSB in, with weather and traffic is perfect for IFR training… ATC calls out traffic… Part of your scan is the iPad…. If you don’t see the traffic they called, outside the window… check the iPad to know where it is supposed to be… then back out the window… Works in the darter… will work in your first Mooney… when that time comes…. PP thoughts only, Not a futurist… Best regards, -a- 2 Quote

Maybe it was 1500 away, but it was too damn close for my tastes. Thank you for the advice. 1 Quote
EricJ Posted April 6, 2022 Report Posted April 6, 2022 Stratux will do it via WiFi (probably can be configured for BT as well, but I haven't ever used it that way). You can add a WAAS GPS receiver and AHRS and other stuff optionally for very little money. You can buy them already built or buy kits and put it together yourself, especially if you want to change option configurations or try something different. There's an updated AHRS that some people are starting to use but is still fairly rare. https://www.amazon.com/Stratux-Receiver-Aviation-Weather-Traffic/dp/B071HMQY19 1 Quote

I like the Garmin GDL-52. You get ADS-B in, AHRS, XM weather and Music (if you subscribe). It connects via bluetooth or directly connects. It's the most stable device I've owned. Stratus lost me forever when they had a known problem with the power connector on the Stratus 2 and didn't do the right thing by taking care of their customers. 1 Quote
