I have a G5 in my new panel as a standby instrument.

It does everything I want, except for two things related to navigating while "partial panel" (I put it in quotes because its hardly needle, ball, compass):

1. it requires a few twists and pushes to switch between PFD and HSI mode. If the G3X is out, I really want to be able to switch between the two displays with a single press
2. Although the PFD shows the navigation source, it doesn't show any navigation info, not even the next waypoint in the flight plan.

It shows a CDI, GS and course pointer, what more do you want? Your navigator has the flight plan info.

I mean this humorously, but that's kind of like saying, "I bought a ham sandwich and I'm angry it's not a steak."  These limits have been pretty well known and there were other options out there if you wanted more features.  What made you pick the G5?

The next waypoint and the nav source are already known to the G5. It’s not rocket science to display them.

It’s more like i ordered steak and I’m asking for a side of mashed.

Except mashed isn't on the menu!  I have two G5s and would love if it showed this too, don't get wrong, but (1) they don't, and never have, and (2) I'm not sure how easy they'd be to read if they were squeezed in on the already pretty fully utilized display.  Especially the AI, there's not any room for much else.

I think there's not enough screen space to show what everybody thinks should be on there.   Avoiding display clutter is a positive thing, I think.  It does show distance to the next waypoint.    The GPS navigator, and your EFB, can show the next waypoint.

Something doesn't sound right. If the G5 is being used as a G3X standby instrument, I believe the STC requires it be configured as an ADI and it should not have the HSI option available on the menu.

i thought the same thing when i saw the HSI page. Will ask.

Its not supposed to be switched out to an HSI because if the G3X is out, from a legal standpoint you need the G5 AI. Not the HSI. The G5 AI also has course, glideslope, and heading so there is no need for an HSI.

Also, it’s a backup.  Like a total electrical failure backup…. Your other nav stuff will be dead.  You just need to keep the clean side up with the adi, all the rest is gravy.  Yes it’s simple, but if it does its job, that’s all I can ask.  So far I love mine (although they are primary).

Various displays and radios I have used include Dynon Skyview, G500, GI275, GNX375 and GTN750.  Each could display various information on the map or ADI screens. That various information could be selected from list of 10 or 20 items.  Seems like no matter what I selected to display there was one more item I wanted and had to leave something out.  Should I display time to the next waypoint or to destination?  True airspeed or temperature?  What to omit in order to display winds?  Display this here, display that over there.  So many choices but never enough answers.  Back in the old days we just wanted 20 more knots, 20 more gallons and 200 more pounds useful load.
