Big pilot needs to try on Mooney

I am in CA, so can't help you there much. But how big are you?  Many of us carry extra pounds, some are real tall. With this info, we may be able to help. My F is as wide as a Bonanza, Cherokee etc. Some of the pilots are over 6 feet tall, and fit quite well.  Maybe this will help a little.   Also check out planes for Sale in your area.

Good luck and enjoy.

I am 6'1", 240 and my 201 is fine, but not spacious. I have flown with a 290lb'er in the front with me. I bought my 201 in my early 30's when I had a 32" waist. I am now a big, middle aged guy and the plane still works well for me. Good luck sizing it up. I have a client in Cape Girardeau. If I get out there, I'll look you up for a ride.

Thanks for the posts.

I'm 6'6" most of leg. 230lbs. I sat in a m20c a  long time ago(before kids). I thought it was quite comfortable. But I have a family now and would like to see how much room is behind the seats in the medium body models. Newer long body is out of budget. Also, even though I sat in a Mooney I never flew in one.

I'm 210 and 6'2.  No problem. Lots of leg room and I have to move the seat up about 4-6in to reach the pedals.  Inseam is 34.  I used to be 20 lbs heavier (before Mooney owner) and flew in a "C". Not an issue.  You will be super fine in the long body models but can't say the same for the person sitting behind you.

This is my first post.  I purchased a 78J in May and my only disappointment has been the interior roominess.  Like DrBill, I am 6'2"" with a 34" inseam.  Unlike DrBill, I do not have enough leg room even with the pilot's seat in its most rearward notch.  Crosswind landings were especially challenging because the yoke would hit my knee when I inputted aileron to offset the crosswind.  I solved this problem by sliding the pilot's seat all the way back to its stop.  Although this is a very comfortable flying position for me, the pilot's seat now almost touches the rear bench seat.  I also found it difficult entering and exiting the aircraft so I removed the copilot's seat which essentially makes my J a two seater.  This setup works for me in that 90 percent of my flying is by myself with the other 10 percent being with my wife who really likes all the legroom she has sitting in the right rear bench seat.

I live in Fayetteville, AR and have a '77 "J".  I'd be glad to help you out.  One problem though.  If you want to go for a flight we would need to do it before the end of the month as it will be out of annual on New Years Day.  It'll probably be a couple of weeks before the annual is completed.  If interested, PM me and we can set up a time.

It is a particularly good plane for tall people.  Al Mooney was 6'5'' and they say he built himself an airplane.   I am 6'4'' and 205 with broad shoulders.  Mooney has the best leg room of all small airplanes and as I can attest having tried piper cherokee, cessna 172/182, Bonanza (considered buying until my legs didn't fit) and Diamond DA40 (I owned this was my former plane) and copilot in a Cessna 414 and Cessna P210.  I have flown with one of my flying buddies who is 6'3'' and 250.  It is still fine.  Although I put my 40lb balast in the rear baggage when it is me and a heavy copilot.  It flies absolutely fine and feels comfortable seating.
