Would like to know how many have had catastrophic engine failure and how many of those were early SMOH time.     Would be interested to know what was found to be the root cause.

I have had issues after MOH, just not a catastrophic failure. Required a complete teardown and a new case, under warranty. Made me wish I didn’t have it overhauled. Might consider other categories.

What was the issue and where was it overhauled.

This is quite some time ago, but the case was line bored off center. It would eat up a nose case seal every 20 hours. It was done by Mattituck when they were in NY. It was already out of warranty when we finally figured it out, but they took full responsibility. They even pulled and reinstalled the engine. Mistakes happen, how they corrected it was what made the difference. In this case, nobody got hurt.

Engine itself did not fail, but it sure as heck quit running when a fuel line B nut backed off. 75 Hours SFREM.  I had checked everything by hand.  Next engine change, everything the mx touched, I put a wrench on it.

Stuck valve, bent valve stem, dent on the piston dome…

Excess power needed for climb, removed…

mid time engine…. O360.

Occurred at less than TPA…

Heavy shaking…

No engine monitor to give a hint to what was happening…

Engine had sat for about two years…

Problem was probably carbon build up in the valve guides…

Replaced cylinder, flew another 1k hrs, and 9 more years…

M20C, Pre-MS, circa y2k.

PP thoughts only, not a mechanic…

Best regards,
