Hank Posted December 16, 2020 Report Posted December 16, 2020 Emails are easy to ignore. Time for phone calls, keep calling until you reach a human. Quote
thinwing Posted December 16, 2020 Author Report Posted December 16, 2020 Hank...the real live FAA people are apparently working from home ...all you get is a recording saying we will contact you shortly//// Quote
Sheriff23 Posted December 16, 2020 Report Posted December 16, 2020 Thinwing, I had a FAR interpretation question recently regarding regarding military medicals. I tried calling the Washington DC FSDO....No Joy, so..... I submitted the question via email to the Washington DC Main FSDO. I had a reply within an hour from an FAA Rep who was teleworking and he answered everything via email. I'd try that route. Here's the link: https://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/field_offices/fsdo/dca/contact/ There's a link to email a question. Sheriff 1 Quote
Jim Peace Posted December 16, 2020 Report Posted December 16, 2020 Have fun...beg for forgiveness later...if it is even an issue....The FAA is all messed up.....my 1st class medical is extended 3 months and prob will get another extension. 1 Quote
MooneyMitch Posted December 16, 2020 Report Posted December 16, 2020 Dumb question, or maybe a good question from a dumb person (me )..... do you need the commercial cert. to fly a non-commercial flight? 2 Quote
rbridges Posted December 16, 2020 Report Posted December 16, 2020 Is there an insurance issue if something comes up? Otherwise, I'd probably ask for forgiveness if there is an incident since covid has made everything wonky this year. 2 Quote
thinwing Posted December 16, 2020 Author Report Posted December 16, 2020 thanks for replys..i am going to try sheriffs link 1 Quote

Not a dumb question but a very good one indeed. As I read above I think the specific issue is that the OPs Temporary Airman Certificate - Commercial Pilot is going to lapse as it is only good for 120 days from issue. While you can have a commercial certificate and not exercise the associated privileges and therefore not need the associated class 2 or higher medical. However, in this case when he received his interim his PP certificate was likely invalidated and had a hole punched in it leaving him at the mercy of the temporary airman certificate. Line 5 of his temp certificate reads: "It becomes void -- 5. in any case, at the expiration of 120-days from date of issuance." Hopefully Sheriff's link helps. 2 Quote

DMM Posted December 16, 2020 Report Posted December 16, 2020 Sounds like somethings lost in the mail or has fallen deep into the FAA blackhole. According to the FAA website they are processing temporary certs issued Nov 25. You can try this link giving instructions for requesting an extension online via FAA website. But a follow up phone call may be best. Good luck. https://www.safepilots.org/wp-content/uploads/what-to-do-if-your-temporary-airman-certificate-is-expiring-soon.pdf 1 Quote

McMooney Posted December 16, 2020 Report Posted December 16, 2020 way i understand it, you still carry the privs of a PPL, piece of plastic doesn't matter. Quote

Where does it say in the FAR that a hole punch invalidated his private pilot certificate? I'd be willing to bet if you check the airman registry that he still has a private pilot certificate. 1 Quote
RLCarter Posted December 16, 2020 Report Posted December 16, 2020 (edited) i would think it’s no different than a 2nd class medical expiring, you can still exercise your ppl privileges i would ask my insurance just to be safe Edited December 16, 2020 by RLCarter 1 Quote

They may have notched it or cut a corner but you have the PPL. I would fly with the PPL and the temp commercial cert. It is COVID season. You don’t lose your PPL privileges, you just can’t work for hire. If you have a 3rd Class medical that is only good for PPL anyway. I would bring some of your emails and not worry too much about it. I think if you look in the COVID related SFARs you may find an extension anyway. Quote
hypertech Posted December 16, 2020 Report Posted December 16, 2020 Where is that in the FAR? Your certificate was superseded but your private certificate was not suspended or revoked. You might not be able to exercise the commercial privileges if your temporary expires and your permanent does not arrive, but it would be an absurd result if your private certificate somehow stopped existing without due process. I can't find anything in the FAR and can only find this policy notice. https://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Notice/N_8900.490.pdf Quote
thinwing Posted December 16, 2020 Author Report Posted December 16, 2020 no hard copy of PPL...examiner took that...ive got a call out to insurence co to see if Im covered with an expire temp cert...honestly I never dreamed it would take 4 months to issus new one 1 Quote
hypertech Posted December 16, 2020 Report Posted December 16, 2020 Also. if they have processed it and just not mailed your new card, you might be able to print out a new temporary here: https://amsrvs.registry.faa.gov/amsrvs/Logon.asp 2 Quote
thinwing Posted December 16, 2020 Author Report Posted December 16, 2020 i keep checking daily on FAA web site and it still shows old license Quote
hypertech Posted December 16, 2020 Report Posted December 16, 2020 Did you do this? https://download.aopa.org/advocacy/2019/190124_temporary_certificates.pdf 1 Quote
cliffy Posted December 16, 2020 Report Posted December 16, 2020 Make sure you write down everything you try and the dates and times for a written record. Document everything, every phone call, every email (with copies and dates, etc Nothing beats a good paper trail 3 Quote
