231LV Posted April 3, 2019 Report Posted April 3, 2019 Hi all with the newly overhauled engine and a new JPI 900, I'm dying to do a fly away to the Bahamas. I'm hoping for some thoughts of Cays to visit and places to stay and the best season to do it. It's just my wife and I and she has muscular dystrophy so beaching is pretty much out and trying to find a nice flat Airbnb is priority. We carry an electric scooter and walker in the plane (rear seat fold down option). She loves the beach and the whole tropical scene but her disability has really crushed her dreams of just living there for a couple of months. If I can get her to agree to go, (overwater flight makes her understandably nervous with her non-working legs) I'm hoping to find a killer Cay with a nice Old Bahamain feel and a suitable Airbnb. If anyone has flown the Bahamas or has some links for suggestions of flying down there, I would deeply appreciate it. We have flown Baja and the Yucatan in Mexico as well as Canada so international flying is not a problem. Our magic carpet was made for traveling....not $200 hamburger runs! 1 Quote
Flash Posted April 4, 2019 Report Posted April 4, 2019 I liked George Town in Exuma, and there appear to be some airbnbs there. The "out islands" seem more interesting than the big ones. Quote
carusoam Posted April 4, 2019 Report Posted April 4, 2019 We have plenty of threads on that great topic... We also have discussions on flotation devices... nobody has enough leg to withstand that amount of time in the water... There are rental rafts available as well... Are you familiar with the search function... ‘Bahamas’ will pull up a few threads... Many are recent and very detailed... with pics... with island by island reviews... restaurants, places to stay, and Fuel.... plus all the other small costs tossed in. I think Flyboy posted pics of what he reported as himself and his beach muscular friends.... Let us know if you are unable to find the other threads... I think the Bahamas will make a great flight and a great vacation. Best regards, -a- Quote
Jeev Posted April 4, 2019 Report Posted April 4, 2019 My favorite place to fly and I’ve done Vegas to the Bahamas and back 6 times via Mooney! Stop at KFPR for fuel, a raft, Bahama pilots guide and life vest rental, I love Fernandez Bay on Cat Island and they give a pilots discount. You have to stop at staniel cay and North Eleuthera while you are there. I skip Nassau and grand Bahama since I prefer the non touristy Bahamas. Be proficient in your crosswind gusty landings and plan to have way more fuel than you need as sometimes the smaller islands will be out of fuel. Have a great time Quote
bradp Posted April 4, 2019 Report Posted April 4, 2019 Skip the big city islands. Have been to Eleuthera governors harbor and Treasure Cay in the power three months. My new favorite Mooney destination. Well worth it. Beautiful, slow, relaxed. Quote

bradp Posted April 4, 2019 Report Posted April 4, 2019 Eleuthera was very laid back apartment in town with day trips by car to explore. Deserted beaches etc. treasure was great in its own way. More of a resort. Awesome day trip by boat around Abaco sea was highlight. Beach also awesome. Green turtle cay a great day trip. Never made it to marsh harbor - too much to do. 1 Quote
AlexLev Posted April 4, 2019 Report Posted April 4, 2019 Staniel Cay is great, my wife and I stayed at an Airbnb at Black Point (5 min flight from staniel cay) and then made day trips to Staniel Cay and even Cat Island to explore a bit further. Quote
231LV Posted April 5, 2019 Author Report Posted April 5, 2019 Thanks all for the great suggestions .... I realize the Bahamas are several hundred cays so the choises are nearly limitless. This will give me some good places to start! Quote
moodychief Posted April 6, 2019 Report Posted April 6, 2019 At Treasure Cay there are one-level cottages you can rent with easy access for a wheelchair. There are daily ferry’s from Abacos to Green Turtle, Elbow, and Man-o-war Cays. Quote
flyboy0681 Posted April 6, 2019 Report Posted April 6, 2019 Ah, Elbow Cay. Looking left and looking right on the beach at Hope Town Lodge. My wife and I will be there the weekend of June 7th in case anybody wants to joins us. f 1 Quote
carusoam Posted April 8, 2019 Report Posted April 8, 2019 Flyboy’s pictures are killer! How can you say no to that! Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
mooneyman Posted April 8, 2019 Report Posted April 8, 2019 We just returned from Staniel Cay in the Exumas! Beautiful little island with lots to see nearby! Definitely hire a local boat captain to take you to Thunderball grotto, pig beach, iguana beach, and Compass Cay! Runway at MYES is in great condition but strong cross winds prevail! 1 Quote
Jeev Posted April 8, 2019 Report Posted April 8, 2019 Awesome!! My absolute favorite place to fly!! Glad you had a good time and yeah almost always a stiff crosswind blowing from the east at Staniel Cay! 1 Quote
carusoam Posted April 9, 2019 Report Posted April 9, 2019 Now you’ve done it! Pics of the O in the Bahamas! Did the kids ask... Can we bring one home? Best regards, -a- 1 Quote

alextstone Posted April 9, 2019 Report Posted April 9, 2019 My wife, Denise, and I are headed down to Eluthera / Governors Harbor / Staniel Cay in two weeks for 6 days. We are staying at a bed and breakfast called Pineapple Fields. Here's the link: http://www.pineapplefields.com/index.html I'll keep my eyes peeled for a spot that suits your and your wife's requirements. This will be our first trip together in the Bahamas and my first one in the Mooney Bravo. I am beyond excited! Like you, I just had a new JPI monitor installed so that will make the trip all the more interesting. Quote

Let me correct you on one thing however, it's not a B&B but more like a spacious condo. Tippy's is a great watering hole across the street. If you like a long stretch of deserted, white sand beach, you're headed to the right place. Quote

Yes, we are looking for quiet, sandy, sunny lazy days with the intermittent day trip to other Cays sprinkled in for more fun. Quote

When we were there during the summer months, we experienced some sand fleas. 1 Quote
