Our 530W has had a few problems with the screen lately. This is a picture taken just after the initial vector to the LDA approach into KROA last Monday. I've also seen the screen rolling and unreadable couple of times in the past but cleared up on its own. This time it just went to this screen and stayed there, I turned the unit off and then back on during the approach and after it reset and I reentered the approach it worked normally. I continued the approach on Nav 2 without problems. Naturally it happened in IMC. Has anyone else experienced this?

I had my screen go out on my 430w, but it looked a little different than that, sort of like it was faded out. Anyway, sent it to Garmin for overhaul and it came back looking and operating like new, I'm guessing you'll need to do the same. Good luck!

The only question would be if its reproducible so that there won't be any doubt that they know what to fix. But I'd be still be calling Garmin Tech support.

My guess is that you have been flying sideways too much.

Back in the day...

there was a knob for that... it was called either vertical or horizontal...

So, if the knob is now an automated IC chip on the video board... (i’m With the Yetti)

I’m pretty sure, sending a pic with the device to Garmin is pretty self explanatory... a video may even explain more...

Were you able to get any use out of it with the display on the fritz? Was it still working on the last frequency? And navigating to the next waypoint?

Let us know how it works out...

Best regards,

I was thinking trade in for the Avidyne 540, but then I realized some unsuspecting soul may suffer the worst of outcomes. Get it fixed while garmin still provides service.

carusoam I didn't really take time to see if the unit was still providing guidance due to the situation but I didn't notice any difference on the HSI so I'd assume it was still navigating. I went to NAV2 and turned the 530 off to see if a restart would clear up the problem which it did however I was well into the approach by the time everything was reset on the 530. I tend to think its a screen problem but without the waypoint info on the screen its sketchy to trust anything you're seeing. My thinking was I had the nav2 localizer tuned and identified so fly the approach and figure it out later. It was a little unnerving and irritating at the same time, I fly practice approaches all the time in the clear so why now in imc does it take a hike? murphy

Try pointing the Wemac air vent on the copilot side to the avionics center stack. This helps substantially on cooling the avionics.

José

Yeah, but my wife complains that her feet get cold when I do that :D

Has to be said ...  Never had a $150.00 tablet and Stratux go fritzy like that when I needed it

Is your tablet and Stratux 15 years old as this probably is, exposed to vibrations, outdoor temperature changes, etc...

Redundancy is a beautiful thing in times like these. Nav2, Stratus II,  IPad, IPhone ForeFlight etc. This was an impromptu IFR flight and even though I had current paper I realized (during this flight) out of date ForeFlight cancels the georeferencing feature on maps and plates. Who knew? That’s enough for me to keep the thing updated it’s a very nice backup in the soup.

Which is how it should be.  Make technology cheap enough that you can just buy another one without fear of losing the college fund.   Had this exact conversation last week.  You have your true SCADA device that costs $100K and is out of calibration and needs a F150 visit.   But you have 5 IoT devices that are all reporting the same, more accurate number, but they cost $1K  Realizing that meters only get placed for commercial purposes.   Do you shutdown the pipeline or go with the cheap devices?

In computer world your video driver board is on the fritz.   It is a 15 year old computer after all.....

Yea, and if he had internal access I would recommend pulling screen cable or resetting video card after cleaning contacts with electronic cleaner.
Also I would update the software before contacting Garmin, because that’s first thing they will ask you to do.

I was thinking the same thing... back when televisions had tubes. I also couldn't remember whether (oddly enough) whether it was vertical or horizontal HOLD... If it wasn't rolling top to bottom I think it was the vertical hold and if it was rolling it was horizontal hold or a combination...
