Thinking about visiting Banff and it's an airport of entry, it doesn't seem terribly ga friendly.

I can stop in Montana and tanker in gas so I won't have to buy expensive Canadian fuel, but how about the fees to tie down? Million air usually isn't too bad in the states.

Cybw doesn't appear to be an airport of entry unless I have a can pass and I don't have time  for that I don't think (4-6 weeks). I can try and stop short I guess then to cybw.

I haven't checked in a while but seem to recall that Lethbridge is a port of entry. CYBW is ofc much more convenient if you go straight to Banff. I'd check and see if you can't get Canpass in time.

GL, and let us know how it goes. I have a cousin in Calgary that I intend to visit some day on my way to my daughter in B.C.

I don't know but I am planning the same thing in about 2 months

My limited research found CANPASS which is supposed to be an easier way to get through customs.  There is CWRY Milk River which you can stop at as a point of entry from what I understand with CANPASS.  It appears that Lethbridge CYQL with CANPAS is also a POE

Also Spingbank CYBW

Also I would be possibly be looking to spend the night in Calgary.

Anyone with more information would be helpful.

they say 4-6 weeks, I'll fire it off tomorrow and see if I can't get lucky. It's good for 5 years so I'll use it another time anyway.

I do not see lethbridge, only calgary and endmonton in AB

I'm based at CYBW and I don't think you need can pass as long as you come in while they are operational. They send agents down from CYYC to come meet you, at least that's the way it used to operate.  They will be closed tomorrow because it's a Canada day holiday, but I'll make a call for you Tuesday.  YYC is not ga friendly, it will cost you $110 to land there, I'm not sure what it's costs to exit, but I'm sure it will be something, Springbank is where you want to go, but even parking there is at a premium.

I flew in to Lethbridge from Great Falls to clear customs. It was a relatively painless experience, but I did receive a bill for $12 a few weeks later.

Last year I had cleared customs at YYC and received a much larger bill.  I prefer the Lethbridge experience, especially considering how close it is to Great Falls.

I avoided YBW as my initial entry airport simply because I don't have CANPASS, so I'm interested to hear if you are able to clear here.

I cross the border quite regularly.  Going from Canada to the States from Vancouver, BC, I like to stop at KBLI, mainly to get customs over and done with.  US Customs are not too friendly if you are early or late, and even less friendly if you divert, even if to another customs airport.  Coming back, my customs stop is Abbotsford, just across the border.  I don't even shut down, just call Customs if no-one is there to meet you.

I have flown into Calgary International for day trips and used The Shell Aerocentre. To be honest I don't know where the customs apron is, but if it is a stop and go, I don't think it will be too painful.  If it were me, I'd find a quieter first stop and then park at Springbank for the rest of your trip.

Check the CFS on Calgary ops as they do not allow operations for light GA aircraft after 4:30pm until 10:30 ( I think ) local time. No take offs or landings. Large landing fee. Larger ramp fees.

Springbank CYBW if at all possible.

I'm not sure, it's listed on the can pass list but not the aoe/15 list. If they'll accommodate that would be handy.

So yyc definitely off the table. Worst case Lethbridge is on the way, I'll stop in cut bank to tanker in cheap gas.

Any rental car suggestions? Go through the fbo is probably the easiest but I don't know about the pricing.

We won't be coming until mid August, so I have time. Need charts now too.

There are no rentals, per se, at Springbank but Springbank Air Services has an agreement with Enterprise/National to have a car waiting there for you. It comes from Cochrane. Call the FBO and they can give you the number to arrange the rental. Ramp fee is $55 but waived with fuel purchase.

We're Canadian eh!  Happy belated 150th birthday to us!

Best of all the customs guy in Kalispell said he thought the parks were free for the anniversary.

Worst of all 170 dollars for the radio station license and 60 for the operator license.

Oh and 28 bucks for the customs sticker.

Don't forget you'll need permission from Uncle Sam to leave the US through your EAPIS filing!

Yeah, that's easy though. I already talked to the inbound office and they're able to meet me on a sunday with advance notice no problem. Nice little trip, 1750NM and the longest leg is just over 600. 3.5 hrs to cut bank, get that cheap gas, 1.5 to cywb, 1 to gpi, more cheap gas 1 to idaho for a couple nights and no gas and about 2.5 home.

OK good luck they keep talking about the huge number of people expected to be in Idaho for the eclipse.  I was halfway thinking about flying the eclipse. it would be an interesting flight.

they keep talking about that everywhere in the path, I have hotel and car reservations, I should be OK unless the airport fills up, but I've got u82 and u70 right there if it does.

Just talked with the people at Canpass ( 1-888-226-7277 ), and asked them about non canpass holders and landing at CYBW, you are good to go between the hours of 9:00am and 9pm, you just have to make the standard call to them, they will come and meet you at the the airport.  I also talked to someone in the tower (atc), and he tells me hes only seen an agent out there maybe twice in past year.  Canpass holders can land at CYBW 24 hours a day, that seems to be the only difference.
