Looking for an outer wing skin for a friend (not the tip, but the one just inside of it).  I believe it was from the right side...I have not seen the damage.  He's not a member of mooneyspace, so I thought I would check for him.  The part number is:  220000-146.

Sorry I can't help with the part, but I'm curious if there is some problem getting the skin from the factory. I thought there was no problem with the parts supply now.

It's not a problem of getting one from the factory (they are fairly expensive), there are just a number of people here who have parts planes and I thought if one would give him a better deal than Mooney, it would be helpful.  I'm guessing one of those with parts planes has a wing with corrosion on the spars...  This would be a way to utilize that wing for the purpose of keeping one more mooney flying.

BTW, his plane is a '67 m20c, but from the parts manual, the c, d, and e wings are all the same part number, and it seems that there was no change through time on them.

A used wing skin would require a lot of labor to remove, and the rivet holes likely wouldn't match what your friends already has. Best to get a new skin with no holes, and back drill through the existing holes to get a proper match. I'd be surprised if the factory skin is crazy-expensive...not much labor goes into it, but who knows how bad the mark up us these days.

Mooney (and the service centers) want ~$770 for the skin, which is fairly expensive for what it is (if, as you say the rivet holes still need to be drilled).

He thought perhaps the wing could be cut just inside of the seam and he would do the removal work for the skin.  (I see a left side like this available on ebay...)

This, of course, would make this idea useless.  How certain are you of this?  Looking over the wings on our planes, the rivets are so regular, we thought the holes might align...

THANKS for your thoughts!

You might call LASAR and talk to Dan or another parts specialist to confirm, but I'm pretty sure the replacement skin will be blank and that the factory hand drills them, so a used skin won't match.

I honestly think you'll come out much better starting with a new factory skin.

I've made one before for a different plane. You will need a form (pipe) that has the shape of the mooney edge, some duct tape and a shop vac.  Essentially you place the pipe where the leading edge is and then wrap the aluminum around it 1/2 the way and thentape it up like a pouch so it is airtight. Connect up the shop vac and let it suck the air out.  The aluminum will pulled down tight on the form and take its shape. The vac will only take a few seconds. I'm unsure if the mooney leading edge is a simple radius or more complex.   There used to be several u-tube video's and detailed write ups online that shows step by step how to do this.

I'm certain he could do this.  He's built at least one aluminum airplane.  I'm a do-it-yourselfer, but he makes me look like a poser.  I'm honestly surprised he asked me about looking for the part.

If you want match drilled skins, you'll have to buy your parts from Vans Aircraft.  They figured it out years ago.

Yeah, but I figured that was just for the experimental market, I figured Mooney could have figured that out years ago...Oh wait, they pushed him out of the company.

I didn't mean that Vans sells parts for Mooneys, just that they have match drilling worked out for many of their models.
