Bob - S50
Just looking for opinions, although I know they are rarely expressed here. Do any of you have a preference for oil filter brand? If so, do you prefer Champion or Tempest and why? The reason I ask is that we've been using Champion because that's what they sell at Spencer's which is the closest place to buy a filter for us. They cost about $28.50 including the tax. I just discovered that I can buy the Tempest version for $19.50 at QAA.com with no tax and free shipping. If I buy 6 at a time they are $19 even. Oldguy
+1 for Tempest. Picked up a 6-pack at Sun-n-Fun this year.
Bob_Belville
We (myself, my A&P who is now a MSC) use Tempest. I usually buy 6 at a time through Aircraft Spruce. (I buy oil - AeroShell 100W - wherever it's cheapest, including freight. Oil-Store is usually cheaper than AS.) Don't really have a "why". I guess the quality of the spark plugs would prejudice me toward Tempest but the filter could be identical for all I know. The Tempest filter has a magnet in the end which we check for ferrous particles. Champion may have same?
M016576
30% cheaper, hard to beat that. At risk of starting a huge flame war...like oil itself, the filter is pretty standardized. Pleated paper, a spring, a few seals, and it's all held to a PMA. If this filters weren't working, we would have found out by now
KSMooniac
Tempest for me as well...if only because they gave us great spark plugs while champion let their quality go down and refuse to fix it until they lost a lot of market share.Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk
1964-M20E
I prefer the one that fits. Other than that it is what ever one I buy when I order them.
Raptor05121
Tempest. Partly because of the magnet inside, partly because of the massive heartbreak of dealing with Champion's plugs
AaronDC8402
We use tempest because that's what the mechanic suggested. He suggested it because of the magnet.
kevinw
The Aviation Consumer did a comparison of these oil filters and I seem to recall that while both were very good they gave the nod to Tempest because of the internal magnet. I've been using Champion but when I need to reorder I'm going with Tempest because of the lower price.
Deb
Here's a link to the article Kevin referenced: http://www.aviationconsumer.com/issues/43_3/maintenancematters/Spin-On-oil-Filters_6355-1.html Tempest generously donated a set (12) of fine wire spark plugs to the Mooney Summit and the Bob Gilliland foundation in October for the silent auction. (Full disclosure, I am a board member.) This alone would make us choose Tempest.
Bob - S50
Thanks All, I think we will go with Tempest for the next oil change.
Yetti
Tempest for the magnet

I know a little something about those spark plugs, they are currently help hold down the shelves in my hangar but will eventually end up in my plane. I need to look into the tempest filter, I use Champion filters right now, but only because that is what D-Max had put on the plane prior to my purchasing it.
rbridges
I've ordered champion simply because I knew the part number. Lol. I may try tempest at the next oil change--I've already switched to their plugs.
Hank
Ya'll have almost convinced me to find the Tempest number equivalent to the Champion CH-48110-1s I've been using for the last nine years (because that's what was on it when I bought her then). Guest
Change the prefix from CH to AA for a Tempest filter. I install long filters 48111, 48104 and 48109 on Mooneys as applicable other than a K model, a long filter on a K hits the cowl flap torque tube. Hank
Thanks, Clarence! With the. 48110-1, I must have 1/2" clearance to the firewall when unscrewed. Maybe 9/16".
Andy95W
I have a remote oil filter mount and the Champion fits better (unfortunately). I've changed everything else over to Tempest products, to include a new vacuum pump that arrives tomorrow.

Do you know what long filter would replace it?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
takair
Hmm, have been using Champion forever, but now I may change. The magnet, can it be easily inspected?
Bob_Belville
My M20E takes a AA18110-2. I would say there is not enough room to get a torque wrench on the long version - AA48111. philiplane
Tempest, mostly for the magnet, partly for the price, and a little bit to stick it to Champion for all the spark plug BS over the last few years.

Now, any opinions regarding the benefit of the longer filter?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
