Hi,

I've a 1982 "j"  I was curious what kind of paint was used on these planes?   Is it a single stage urethane.   Or a basecoat clear coat.   Does anyone know?

ZT,

The paint that was used on the plane is often detailed in the first pages of the airframe's maintenance log.

Best regards,

But check for repaints . . . My plane has 2-part epoxy or urethane, I haven't looked and don't remember exactly what I was told.

I'm not aware of any epoxy finish coats for airplanes.  There's urethane, arcrylic enamel, and lacquer, for the vast majority of airplane paint jobs.  Arcrylic enamel resembles urethane until it's left outside for 3 years, then you can tell because it chalks up.  It's not close to urethane in durability.

Mine is painted with Imron AF400. Comparable to that is Sherwin-Williams Jet-Glo. There's also Alumigrip, which is low quality.

The Maintenance Manual contains this note:

"M20J aircraft are painted with Enflex III urethane enamel. Inquiries concerning application of this finish should be directed to: Pratt & Lambert, P.O. Box 2153, Wichita, KS. 67201."

Did you get your engine overhaul completed?

I have some corrosion, mainly in the wheel wells that I want to touch up with paint.  What type should I use for that?

Yes the engine is back in my hangar, still raising money for the prop overhaul and all the parts to install.
