jax88 Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 I want to try mounting my Garmin 496 in front of my pilot control wheel. If any of you have a mounting system that places a device in front of the control wheel, I'd love to hear about it and see some pictures. I prefer to NOT have to mount the 496 on top of the control wheel or yoke, as this tends to block my view of a couple of the guages. Quote
fantom Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 RAM mounts are your best bet. http://www.ram-mount.com/ramgps.htm Quote
Piloto Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 I made small bracket clamped to the yoke shaft to hold the 396. I found the yoke to be the best location for visibility and accessibility. As you see on the picture it does not blocks the panel view. José Quote
carusoam Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 Mine is similar to Jose's, but supplied by garmin. Only difference is my screen is centered on the yoke and the buttons are closer to the ram's horn. On the ground there is a clearance problem with the instrument panel. I have VOR indicator for Nav 2 that gets bumped. The other thing to consider is a mount to the center post. -a- Quote
jax88 Posted November 17, 2010 Author Report Posted November 17, 2010 I took my 496 out of the AirGizmo and just held it on top of the control wheel to see how much it would block, and my view of the DG and the vertical speed indicator is seriously degraded. However, this is while on the ground. Quote
N33GG Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 I have the same issues with my C model. Has anyone found a good solution mounting the 496 to the center post where it sits just on top or in front of the glare shield, and not blocking visibility to the instruments? I would prefer a solution other than the yoke mount. Thanks! Quote

flight2000 Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 I used the Garmin supplied yoke mount that came with the 496 as well. It looks like it blocks th lower instruments, but when I'm in the seat, I'm tall enough to see everything. The avionics shop hard wired it to the ships power and the 430W for crossfeed. Brian Quote
Lood Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 I have the Hendricks Mfg center post mount and it is absolutely amazing. It's very well made, fits 100% and solid as a rock. The GPS is out of the way but still very much within reach and view. It is not obstructing anything and best of all, there's no wires or cables hanging all over the place. For me, it's either this or a panel mount. Quote
ELT Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 Lood is right. I tried several option with a 496 in my E and the Hendricks mount is the best. I am now trying different mounting options with an iPad. The ipad RAM mounted on the co-pilot yoke is the best option yet but some sun angles are problems. Quote
jax88 Posted November 18, 2010 Author Report Posted November 18, 2010 Any ideas as to which Ram part number would work best for getting the unit in front of the wheel instead of on top of the wheel. I have the Garmin supplied cradle, but I can't see where it will work with any of the hardware Ram is selling. I suppose I'll have to pony up for the Ram cradle as well as the mount. Quote
N33GG Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 I was not familiar with the Hendricks Mfg. option. Looks great. Thanks for the information! Quote

jpusser Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 For those of you mounting it to the control shaft does it not limit your forward elevator travel. I tried it on my c model and it took to much of the elevator travel out. I would be worried about getting out of a spin or an evasive manuver. Quote
flight2000 Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 Nope. Not to worried about putting myself into a spin either. That would be a bad day all around if that happened. I haven't tried it in the air, but I have enough travel on the ground that I feel confident that it would put me in a pretty steep nose dive if I did. Brian Quote
jax88 Posted November 24, 2010 Author Report Posted November 24, 2010 Called Ram and they recommend a RAM-B-121-GA7U. Quote
yellowjacket Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 I have a 496 mounted on the yoke where the clock used to be in my 68 M20F. It fits perfectly and doesn't obstruct any instruments and is very solid. All I did was take the clock out (I have a Davtron timer on my instrument panel) and used the bracket the clock attached to as a template to cut out a piece of aluminum and drill holes for the screws. It fits excatly in the old bracket's place and I used the bracket provided with the 496 and tapped holes in the plate and screwed the GPS bracket on the plate. I painted the plate the same color as my yoke and it looks like it was standard equipment. Jim Quote
Seth Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 My 496 is mounted exactly as Jim described. I have a clock in a different area now. As Jim mentioned, it fits perfectly and doesn't obstruct any instruments. It's also in a great position for input, just as if you were holding it. At some point, I plan to install a 430 or 530 and interconnect them. Quote
jax88 Posted December 2, 2010 Author Report Posted December 2, 2010 No clock in the yoke of '75F, I ended up getting a Ram mount. I'll post pics when I get it mounted. Quote

yellowjacket Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 Sorry I don't have any pictures of the yoke mount. Next time I am at the airport I will take a few pics and post them. Jim Quote
takair Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 Here is my 396 on the yoke ('64 E). Similar to what Yellowjacket did. First photo is a shot from the back seat, second is from pilot eye view. I have my PC trim just above, so I had to shift things a bit so I could still use it. As I recall I had to redrill a couple of holes in the Garmin mount to make this work. I had bought it just before the Aera series came out, I imagine that would be a nicer fit. Quote
jax88 Posted December 25, 2010 Author Report Posted December 25, 2010 The Ram worked perfectly. Quote
