Cost to install DME

I'd put in an old IFR GPS before I went for any of this stuff.  I bet the install for the GPS will be commensurate with the DME or KNS80.  But its a GPS, and opens up GPS approaches, and will give you DME capability while you're at it.

Also be familiar with how to minimize database costs.  There are a couple of theories of what to use as primary nav being backed up with the GPS.  An out dated database can be used if you verify that it has the waypoints you intend to use.  Waypoints such as VORs and their intersections don't change very much.

I thought I would give an update in case anyone else is looking to follow in my CB path. I ended up purchasing a KN-62 with all the necessary bits for $600 with a short warranty as it is a used item. The reason I went this route was to keep my install cost as low as possible. Based on the shop's estimate and my A&P doing some of the grunt work, it should be around 5 hours @ $90/hr and another 2 at $40/hr. So, I'm looking at an overall cost of around $1100ish and that's about all I would like to spend.

Had I gone with the KNS-80, I would be looking at purchasing a new VOR since my current one isn't compatible and the install cost would have been a little higher as well. I figured I'll just save that money since all I really need is DME to shoot most approaches for now. When the time comes, I would rather put this money into a good GPS. Installation is scheduled for mid-July and I'm looking forward to not being restricted to VFR flying.

Recently, I was talking with my CFII and he said that approaches that require a DME technically require a stand alone DME... so, the KNS80 would technically not be a legal DME for approaches that require one...    I actually have a KN-62, so it was a non issue for me, but has anyone else come across this before with other CFIIs?  I haven't tried to look up the FAR.

Does the KNS80 have a distance display?  (Yes)

If it does, where does it get the distance from...?  (From it's 200 channel DME)

The KNS80 box was pretty modern just before GPS was rolled out.  I would speak with your CFII to verify his thought process.

The King KNS 80 Integrated Navigation System combines a 200-channel VOR/Localizer receiver, a 40-channel glideslope receiver, a 200-channel DME, and a digital RNAV computer with capability for preselection and storage of 4 VOR/LOC frequencies or RNAV waypoint parameters.

I have been instrument rated since the '70s. I added a Narco DME and RNAV to my first panel and had a KNS80 in my current Mooney. I am not a CFII but I think yours is wrong about the stand alone DME requirement. 

When I redid my panel (12/12) the Garmin GPS 155 TSO brought $1050 on EBay and the KNS80 w GS brought only $460. Either one was legal for approaches req DME. I think the first generation GPS was more desirable. Tuning to a VOR is rapidly going the way of the dodo bird.

There is an advisory circular on this... I recently read it after talking about this with an instructor. I am finishing up my CFII and trying to wrap my head around a lot of this type of crap.

You can substitute an approved gps for the dme distance provided: the fixes are in the database, not custom user designed waypoints, your database is current, and you set the gps to terminal sensitivity.
