bonal Posted May 29, 2016 Author Report Posted May 29, 2016 Seems like forever since my last flight. Just a milk run but was great to get into the sky Snoopy is running great but a little concerned about the higher than I like oil temp. Problem is I never had an issue till I had the cluster overhauled it settles right at the top of the green but cylinder temps are 375 and oil pressure at 75 checked oil after shut down and it didn't seem overly hot in other words just like always. Any way don't want to clutter my own thread with tales of high temps. All I know it was great to be flying again and making 2 great landings. 1 Quote

I love knowing on what is going on under (saying this for Hyett6420) the bonnet. I found that the one location temp reading on the cylinders and exhaust wasn't cutting it for me. 1 Quote
bonal Posted May 29, 2016 Author Report Posted May 29, 2016 Nope just the stock gauges but OT should be a simple reading. Don't get me wrong I would love to have the full Monty but it's just not in my flying budget as I have to spend my flying AMU's on things need replacing and maintenance to keep it safe Quote

A cold front had just passed, and the barometric pressure was 30.24". We practiced some approaches with 35 kt crosswinds, and 90 degree crosswind landings 15G25. We also got gas at KFMY. Note the beautiful clear blue sky. (Fuel price isn't so bad either!) May I ask what is the max x wind you've landed in (sustained)? I've practiced in 25 kts gusting 30 and run out of rudder (on 100" width) Quote
Jerry 5TJ Posted May 29, 2016 Report Posted May 29, 2016 Max Cross Wind Landing: A fairly steady 35 knot direct crosswind in my "E" model at Mather. I'm not sure it can be called a successful landing. Fortunately that runway is a relic of B-47 bomber days and about 11,000' long. The concrete is about 300' wide, with "edge" lights demarcating the center 150 feet of width. I was able to stay on the pavement, but I was out of control for a few seconds and used up all the available width and missed a 2' tall edge light by pure luck. Two hours later, I took off into same conditions by departing straight across the runway. That's how I should have landed. Quote

I have just read that the older analysers are being replaced by edm930s and the like. I don't have space for a 930 but a 700 type will work fine, so I'm in the market for one of those. Apparently there is a guy on here who sells them or something like that, anyone any ideas who? Ps thanks for the tip Andrew Check with Aerodon on this site. He sells JPI new and used. I purchased a WX-500 from him and was pleased with the transaction. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 1 Quote
bonal Posted May 30, 2016 Author Report Posted May 30, 2016 Short hop today would have been nice but I'm all worked up about my oil temps that I now know needs looked into to find out what's up. Gotta love these wonderful old airplanes. But if we weren't flying and tending to their needs what would we do, what would we do. 1 Quote
BradB Posted May 31, 2016 Report Posted May 31, 2016 It was too nice of an evening to stay on the ground. This is a view of Lake Erie and Presque Isle on approach for landing at KERI. 5 Quote
wishboneash Posted May 31, 2016 Report Posted May 31, 2016 Did a Pilots n Paws yesterday from Fresno to Petaluma (O69). On my approach to O69 (about 5 miles out), a Cirrus announced he was on the GPS approach (VFR conditions) and announced on the CTAF he would do a "straight in, traffic permitting". Anyway, he as about about a couple of miles behind me and there was another plane in the pattern ahead of me. Nearing the airport, he kept making the same calls, while I announced I would sequence myself behind the plane in the pattern (a Cardinal) and enter base for Rwy 30. I told the Cirrus that I am ahead and of him and planned to make a base entry for Rwy 30. He just acknowledged but didn't say anything more. After another call by the Cirrus saying the same thing on frequency, some one else on the frequency, gently reminded the Cirrus, the pattern is busy. The Cirrus didn't get the hint the first time and kept saying, "straight-in traffic permitting". So when did he not get it that "Traffic is NOT permitting" given the amount of activity on the field?? So after I turned base again, he announced that he would climb out over the runway and enter downwind midfield. I saw him above me as I was about to turn final. If he had continued his approach, he would have probably broadsided one of us. Just don't get it sometimes why some pilots don't have the courtesy that an IFR approach doesn't mean a straight in into an uncontrolled field with a fairly busy pattern. 1 Quote

carusoam Posted June 5, 2016 Report Posted June 5, 2016 AM, +1 for combining kids softball/baseball with flying! How did you handle the ground transportation part? Or was the airfield next to the ball field? Best regards, -a- Quote
amillet Posted June 5, 2016 Report Posted June 5, 2016 My son picked me up in his F150 saving me a rental car. Ball field about 15 min. Drive from KYKM. 2 Quote

Every family member that came to visit us got the Mt. Rainier tour before anything else. I still remember the sign at Paradise, in '76 or '77, that stated Mt. Rainier had the world record snowfall for 3 of the last 5 years, with most years being near or over 2,000" during that record run. I did a little one week tour in Yakima too, as the Army had a post there for doing desert maneuvers. I was sent over to wrench on some big iron, and they let me take my 1969 Chevelle over instead of a jeep (unbelievable). We pounded main street every night, had 18 drag races and lost one, to another Chevelle (but a 454 one). We listened to Bob Seger's "Night Moves", his current hit on the radio, as we watched the hookers pounding the street corners looking for GI's. Oh what the memories............... Tom 1 Quote
bonal Posted June 5, 2016 Author Report Posted June 5, 2016 Well seems my numba one mission is moms grocery getter. Pretty hot today and not my best landings. Before we got underway I went and locked the damn car keys in the car. Trip A got there in under 1/2 hour so spent time cleaning the bugs off the cowl and polished the prop spinner. Took the guy less than a minute to break in the car so not too bad a start. There was a beautiful polished cessna 140 on the ramp at WLW with fabric wings. Till next time, keep on postin as you keep on flying everyone. never locked keys in since I did it on my dads car when I was ten years old. Hope it's not a sign 1 Quote

Have to have the wallet because it has my pass for work that I need to get in a secure door. Remembered I had changed clothes at the airport Saturday because I had attended a funeral and instead driving back home I took extra clothes to change into. Left my wallet sitting on the wing. Then I start looking for my keys....remember I had let someone from church use my keys and left them sitting in the office. It's 10:00 at night, I have to have both so I tell my wife I've got to run to town. Of course I live 15 miles west of the church and about 20 from the airport. Over an hour later I'm back home......it's tough getting old...... 1 Quote

Bennett Posted June 6, 2016 Report Posted June 6, 2016 Gorgeous Cessna 140. I had a Cessna 120 (no flaps, no D Window) with a highly polished fuselage, and silver painted fabric covered wings. Looked very much like the Cessna in the photo. Stupid me lent that airplane to a friend (after having a CFI sign him off -15 hours dual in that airplane). The day he did his first solo flight he managed to land downwind, slammed on the brakes, and cart wheeled that once beautiful aircraft. Destroyed the airplane! Total loss! He wasn't hurt as I had added Hooker harnesses. I miss that fun little airplane. By the way I had an AV MAP IV imbedded in the panel (removable to keep it a "portable"). Probably the only glass panel 120 at that time. Too bad that the FAA won't classify the C120-140s as LSAs (too heavy). 2 Quote
amillet Posted June 8, 2016 Report Posted June 8, 2016 Flew from W. Washington to Denver today. I left a day early because of weather system that followed me out. Dodged some rain showers in WY. I'm here for PPP. 3 Quote
bonal Posted June 12, 2016 Author Report Posted June 12, 2016 Today it was very important that we get Snoopy out for a flight what with all that's happened these past few days the sadness felt for the tragedies in GA was good to be airborne enjoying our Mooney. Just a short hop to o69 for one of the best breakfast burritos around. Saw an M20f or g depart as we were getting ready to fly home. Just good to be flying. 2 Quote

Yetti Posted June 15, 2016 Report Posted June 15, 2016 With all the floods (people are saying we got 34 inches one night several weeks ago) and crash talk lately it is good to go check out and make sure one still has the stuff to commit aviation. It was a 30 minute flight, but enough to clear the air. Sommerville dam with a bit of water going over the spillway. 4 Quote

MyNameIsNobody Posted June 16, 2016 Report Posted June 16, 2016 Last Friday Planned for a Mid-Day departure to see The Cure in Kansas City. The weather was forecast to be crappy so planned to drive. (About 4.5). Weather looked good in the morning and I asked "why are we not flying"? As we departed the driveway. Some discussion resulted in a retreat of a few blocks to grab flight bag and headset. We departed and flew with a slight crosswind and about 135-140 knots at 6500. 10LOP with a flow of 10.1GPH. Talking to Chicago and Kansas City Approach I was cleared through the Class B for Downtown at or below 3000. On landing found fuel to be 3.99/gallon and no tie down fee. NICE. Our first "Uber" experience and all went great. Outdoor venue "Starlight" was fantastic. The Cure hadn't lost a thing since the 80's. Warm night with a light breeze... Next morning a leisurely wake-up and a return at 7500. 9.1GPH and a nice push saw 160-165 knots. Climb was a wonderful 1100-700 fpm at over 140knots! 1.4 on return vs. 1.6 on trip down. 3 hours in the air up high nice and cool vs. 9+ droning on the interstate. I love GA. I love my Mooney. I love The Cure. I love my Co-Pilot. 6 Quote
