BDPetersen Posted November 1, 2015 Report Posted November 1, 2015 My new-to-me M20C came equipped with an IFR certified Garmin 155XL tso gps, old but useable. It flew a non-precision approach on the pre-buy demo flight. Imagine my surprise when I updated and installed a new database and the unit powered up as a VFR only, no approaches in db! After two calls to Jeppesen tech support, they discovered that they no longer support this unit with IFR db's. (Everything was in order with my subscription, card, etc.) Monday I will be calling Jeppesen customer service and Garmin to discuss and confirm this turn of events. I'm hoping it is some kind of error, but . . . Hard to imagine that on a whim a decision can be made that impacts the potential value of an airplane by a fair amount and could cost even more for an upgrade. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this, or maybe I'm the last one out here using antique gps. Quote
Browncbr1 Posted November 1, 2015 Report Posted November 1, 2015 That really blows. I'm so afraid to buy a garmin GPS Quote
Conrad Posted November 1, 2015 Report Posted November 1, 2015 They keep making more and more approaches and the unit probably has some fairly fundamental restrictions on memory size. I imagine maybe they could do east coast/west coast but I don't think they care enough at this point. I assume it's still enroute certified though? Quote
Jim Peace Posted November 1, 2015 Report Posted November 1, 2015 I wonder if it is the same with the 300XL.....I will be updating when I get to my plane this week.......I will advise. The reason I ask is that when I update through the jepp app for my 300XL it starts out showing for the the 155xl. Picture enclosed..... Quote
BDPetersen Posted November 1, 2015 Author Report Posted November 1, 2015 East-West an interesting idea for db size. Will find out tomorrow. Really don't know what is legal for navigation. Database calls itself VFR. Would be happy with ability to enroute navigate legally (all the while following Foreflight). Quote
cliffy Posted November 1, 2015 Report Posted November 1, 2015 That sucks I've got one too Do tell all tomorrow Next week it might be the 430-530s Pick a destination and tell ATC "how about direct XXX it looks to be 341 degrees" Most of the time you'll get it. Most of the time the'll say, "heading 341 untill able". Quote
Oscar Avalle Posted November 1, 2015 Report Posted November 1, 2015 That is really serious... I must admit I never thought about that at some point you may lose their database support. Quote
BDPetersen Posted November 1, 2015 Author Report Posted November 1, 2015 Well, let's hope it's all a mistake or there is a work-around. Stay tuned. Quote
carusoam Posted November 2, 2015 Report Posted November 2, 2015 (edited) The database size became an in issue for BK's KLNs recently, as well. New DB coverage was adopted to provide a solution. Good luck with yours, -a- Edited November 2, 2015 by carusoam Quote
Jim Peace Posted November 2, 2015 Report Posted November 2, 2015 (edited) I hope they don't split it....I use the full USA even in my 64C. I am planning to fly NJ to CA next weekend..... Edited November 2, 2015 by Jim Peace Quote
BDPetersen Posted November 2, 2015 Author Report Posted November 2, 2015 Great news! Emergency is over. Turns out the Jeppesen website, through which I subscribed to the updates, lumped the 150's with the 155's (at least that's how I read it). 150's are VFR only, thus I was pumped the wrong database. If only tech support would have picked up on that Saturday. Sorry for any mass panic I may have incited. Now sitting on my hands. 1 Quote
Andy95W Posted November 2, 2015 Report Posted November 2, 2015 Sorry for any mass panic I may have incited. Now sitting on my hands. Holy crap! I actually woke up in the middle of the night thinking about this. I just bought my GPS 155 TSO less than a week ago from a fellow MooneySpacer. LESS THAN A WEEK! Thanks for clearing this up so quickly. Maybe I can sleep tonight. 1 Quote
Marauder Posted November 2, 2015 Report Posted November 2, 2015 One thing I have learned about aviation database subscriptions; they will continue to sell them even if the manufacturer no longer support the box. Der money to be made in dem der boxes! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 2 Quote

Der money to be made in dem der boxes! I think if we were to figure out the "per actual IFR approach" cost of these database subscriptions, we'd go back to shooting VOR and ILS approaches using paper charts! I think the GPS approach I shot into ECP for the Summit was the first actual IFR GPS I've done this year. That was a pretty pricey approach. The banner tow plane just ahead of me snuck in with a special VFR clearance, so I really didn't feel that special doing that approach. 2 Quote

But I use the heck out of the enroute data! Quote
Mooneymite Posted November 2, 2015 Report Posted November 2, 2015 haha. My dollar per actual approach is probably ridiculous, too. But I use the heck out of the enroute data! Depending on various factors, route data may not need a current database, just verified points. I guess there are some that argue about the definition of current data with respect to approaches as well....however, I don't want to go down that road on this thread! Speaking of which....is it true that data cards for the Garmin 650/750 are coded for specific boxes preventing sharing a data subscription with others? Quote

I don't think the cards are specific for an individual GTN. You can buy a Garmin Pilot Pak for two GTNs in the same plane and it will update both. We should try it to see what happens... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk The cards aren't but I thought the downloaded charts were encoded with the serial number of the target unit. The pilot paks make this a non issue. I like the fact no special device is required. 1 Quote

Mooneymite Posted November 2, 2015 Report Posted November 2, 2015 It is box specific on the GTNs. Wow! Note to self: Do not up-grade to a Garmin GTN. Quote
BDPetersen Posted November 2, 2015 Author Report Posted November 2, 2015 It is never a good idea to compute the "cost per" of anything in aviation. Just go with it. Unless that parallel universe- string theory thing works out for us, this may be our only go-round. Enjoy. Quote
donkaye Posted November 3, 2015 Report Posted November 3, 2015 Wow! Note to self: Do not up-grade to a Garmin GTN. In my opinion, a definite mistake not to upgrade for that reason. With either Jepp or Garmin PilotPak it makes no difference. Quote
Marauder Posted November 3, 2015 Report Posted November 3, 2015 It is box specific on the GTNs. So when you upgrade your db on your 750 & 650"do you use two separate cards? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
RLCarter Posted November 3, 2015 Report Posted November 3, 2015 Actually there is an Advisory Circular on the use of EFB's being used for enroute IFR, I used my iPad running Wing-X during my Instr. Ck ride, the only catch is it, the EFB CAN NOT be attached to the aircraft with out having it signed off by an avionics shop, so pop it out of whatever type cradle and put it on your lap before getting to the ramp. 75_M20F Posted November 5, 2015 Report Posted November 5, 2015 So when you upgrade your db on your 750 & 650"do you use two separate cards? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk I have a GTN 750 in my F model. It comes with 2 data cards. One stays in the unit, and the other is to take home and update. You then switch them out after updates. The datacard is supposed to stay in the unit while you are using it. So, yes I believe it would be two cards required for updating two units. I believe I saw on the Garmin update site that you can update two GTN units for the same price if you happen to have two in your plane. I had the GTN installed this summer with a GDL88 to get ready for ADSB. Quote
