Then use whatever is left on your flight instructor to work your butt off.  More safety and value added than a GNS-430.

My #1 nav with GS is rock solid, just need to clean contacts on the display.  

My #2 nav is a little shaky and I am pretty sure it is due to less than adequate shielding on the VOR/LOC wire going to the cdi.
