Joe Larussa Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 I have a Shaw 457 fuel cap. Trying to replace the inner o-ring. Mine has a cap that I believe covers the nut to take this puppy apart. Can't find any instructions on disassembly. All the photos I've seen does not have this cover. Tried to pry it off but I'm afraid I'm going to break something. Picture attached. Thanks in advance! jetdriven Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 that black piece on the bottom unthreads from th shaft. give it a good CCW twist. thos O-rings are only availble through Shaw or through O&N. around 120$ !! for a set of 4 the fuel cap itself is 5500$. Quote
Joe Larussa Posted August 28, 2015 Author Report Posted August 28, 2015 Thanks I'll give it a twist! Geeze 120.00 bones! Quote
chrisk Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 I'm in shock. $5500 for a fuel cap. No wonder general aviation is in trouble. Quote
Marauder Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 I'm in shock. $5500 for a fuel cap. No wonder general aviation is in trouble. It's a special cap. It really is made of gold and painted. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
carusoam Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 The one in the back of the picture is bleeding hard cash... Quote
Yetti Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 Are we sure they are just not an 010 oring? Quote
PTK Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 Personally, I wouldn't have painted it. I would have polished it. Shiny gold fuel caps are in! Quote
Joe Larussa Posted August 28, 2015 Author Report Posted August 28, 2015 Ok so the twist didn't do the job. That sucker is on there! Looks like there is two holes on the bottom of the cap you would put a spanning wrench on to help. I'm sure they sell one for about 1,000 bucks! Ordered the seal today from Spruce at the low low price of 45.00 each! Quote
Marauder Posted August 29, 2015 Report Posted August 29, 2015 Try a deep penetrating spray like SeaFoam's Deep Creep. Once freed up, clean all the parts and,let try before putting on the new rings. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
Joe Larussa Posted August 29, 2015 Author Report Posted August 29, 2015 Should you be able to loosen by hand? Quote
Marauder Posted August 29, 2015 Report Posted August 29, 2015 Should you be able to loosen by hand? Yes, but it may have gotten pretty gummed up,over the years. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
Marauder Posted August 29, 2015 Report Posted August 29, 2015 Can you post a picture of the top, side? Something looks different on your cap. Is the 457 coded on it or is there more to the number like 457-115 Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
carusoam Posted August 29, 2015 Report Posted August 29, 2015 That is not the Mooney standard cap, I don't think. The serrated top edge is typical of the updated bladder tanks, I believe? Best regards, -a- Quote

Best regards, -a- I think it is a bladder cap like mine, just don't remember the extension on the bottom. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 1 Quote
jetdriven Posted August 29, 2015 Report Posted August 29, 2015 yep ! 457-370 I know Jim has a spare, just like I do... Quote
Guest Posted August 29, 2015 Report Posted August 29, 2015 I don't know if this would work, but you could try take it apart and if you break it you're out $20.00. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Shaw-Aero-Fuel-Cap-P-N-457-/111730040803?hash=item1a03a11fe3&vxp=mtr Clarence Quote
Guest Posted August 29, 2015 Report Posted August 29, 2015 It looks like a set for sale here on MS as well. Clarence Quote
Joe Larussa Posted September 1, 2015 Author Report Posted September 1, 2015 Made half a dozen phone calls today from the company that baught Shaw to bladder mechanics and everybody in between. One guy at Shaw thinks it can't be taken apart to be serviced. Can this be that freaking difficult. Here is a picture of the top. Have a new 50.00 seal coming tomorrow. May just have to bag the inner o-ring Quote
Marauder Posted September 1, 2015 Report Posted September 1, 2015 Top picimage.jpg Joe -- I wished I took a picture of mine. But I thought of you when I was refueling and looked at my cap closely. The piece in the middle on mine rotates (the piece you have your thumb on). I think it can be spun off. I noticed when I turned it about 30 degrees and put it back on, the cap lever to lock it was more difficult to close. So, I do think it comes apart... Keep letting us know your progress. My caps are original and have not had their seals replaced. My mechanic tells me every year they look fine... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
Joe Larussa Posted September 2, 2015 Author Report Posted September 2, 2015 Ok so mystery solved. The cap on the rear does unscrew. However you need to push The center shaft down. It raises the cap just enough to see a aluminum pin. Take hacksaw and cut pin. Now you can unscrew and disassemble. Next problem after new o-ring? How to install new pin. Quote

Joe post some pictures if you can. At some point my 23 year old O rings will need to be changed out. Curious to see it apart. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
