IvoryM Posted June 12, 2015 Report Posted June 12, 2015 Hey guys, Is there anyone out there with experience on replacement exhaust systems for a M20E? I want to put a new stock exhaust system on my airplane complete. I do not want to have mine refurbished and I do not want a power flow exhaust. Any recommendations or experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Mitch Quote
KSMooniac Posted June 12, 2015 Report Posted June 12, 2015 You might only be able to buy a brand new stock exhaust directly from Mooney. If you send yours off to get refurbished, it will likely come back with completely new steel throughout the assembly. Option B will very likely cost much less than Option A or Option PF, but you should make the calls to find out for sure. There might be other aftermarket options but I haven't checked in many years. My J came with a Knisley system and it would likely fit the E just the same. i've been completely satisfied with it and I cannot remember if it is an STC replacement or a PMA replacement. Quote
DrBill Posted June 12, 2015 Report Posted June 12, 2015 2 years ago I got one from : Parts Exchange Inc Aircraft Supply Store Address: 2062 Carolina Pl Dr, Fort Mill, SC 29708 Phone:(803) 548-2665 also known as http://www.aircraftexhaust.com/ Last year the mechanic found a crack in a weld on it. They replaced it at no charge. They are close enough I took the old one there, one look and he said ... no problem I'll give you a new one. , BILL Quote
Alan Fox Posted June 12, 2015 Report Posted June 12, 2015 ASI or Dawley will sell you a new one ...... Quote
jetdriven Posted June 12, 2015 Report Posted June 12, 2015 Aerospace Welding Inc is very competitive on the money and their stuff fits. http://awi-ami.com/ 1 Quote
Bob_Belville Posted June 12, 2015 Report Posted June 12, 2015 When my muffler failed I took the opportunity to change to the PFS. I figured it was only costing half since I had to do something and the risers had been rebuilt as least once before. I really am happy with the PFS after 3 years. Wondering why you do not want to upgrade? Quote
jetdriven Posted June 12, 2015 Report Posted June 12, 2015 one is 800$ and one is nearly over 4 grand. 1 Quote

Bob_Belville Posted June 12, 2015 Report Posted June 12, 2015 one is 800$ and one is nearly over 4 grand. Those were not my choices. Over $2000 for rebuilt muffler, tail pipe, new risers, vs. about $4500 for complete PFS. Quote
Alan Fox Posted June 12, 2015 Report Posted June 12, 2015 I also think you are probably stuck with powerflo for service parts and repairs.....Cost verses benefit is a big pill to swallow... Quote
HRM Posted June 12, 2015 Report Posted June 12, 2015 I do not want to have mine refurbished ... No to PowerFlow I understand, but why not refurbished? Once bitten, twice cautious? My experience with refurbished goes to due diligence. Once a good supplier or shop is identified, they are as good as new at a fraction of the cost. Service tends to be better as well. You have already begun the DD by coming here. Just my 2¢ Quote
Bob_Belville Posted June 12, 2015 Report Posted June 12, 2015 I note PFS has a $700 ($900?) discount offer going on right now. http://www.powerflowsystems.com/products.php?cat_id=5&pid=46 Quote

Bob_Belville Posted June 12, 2015 Report Posted June 12, 2015 For $4000 it better get you supersonic Not exactly supersonic but my fifty year old M20E that once sat for 12 years (from 1968 to 1980) after an off field landing, after which control surfaces and landing gear was rebuilt with parts from other plane(s) cruises @ 158k. 1 Quote
bonal Posted June 13, 2015 Report Posted June 13, 2015 So my first annual and my system had more holes than a colander and was sent out for overhaul. When it came back after only a few days I was upset because I thought they were going to repair it not replace it. Well it was my original system that's how good it looked. Three years later no issues. Quote
DonMuncy Posted June 13, 2015 Report Posted June 13, 2015 I may be dead wrong, but I was under the impression that Dawley virtually gave a new exhaust system, merely using something like a single part, so they could call it an overhaul, rather than selling new exhaust systems. 1 Quote
Hank Posted June 13, 2015 Report Posted June 13, 2015 I bought a new muffler & tail pipe in Jan fir only $1575 + 4 hours labor . . . Ain't nothing about an airplane inexpensive . . . Quote

YES!! That is where I had mine done. It is "rebuilt." Funny thing though, the only part that was reused was a flange.... They do excellent work. Mine had several cracks including under the heat muff. Now, just like new. Cost was $1400. Well worth it!! 1 Quote
DrBill Posted June 13, 2015 Report Posted June 13, 2015 I'm thinking mine from Aircraftexhaust.com was c $600 but I'll look in the books late tonight and update this post. Bill Edit: could not confirm the price, found the docs but no price is listed probably since the mechanic bought it and added it in the annual. Bill Quote
ryoder Posted June 14, 2015 Report Posted June 14, 2015 Is there any possibility of having it jet hot coated or chromed or something? Quote
jetdriven Posted June 14, 2015 Report Posted June 14, 2015 I'm getting my tail pipe jet hot ceramic plated. Quote
