ryoder Posted March 10, 2015 Report Posted March 10, 2015 The upgrade prices are a bit high. Speed mods are a bad idea for resale. I got tanks for 2k one piece non 201 windshield for 1500 and I'll do interior and engine for low prices and have a returned C with steam gauges. The GPS is way too expensive in my opinion when I can fly almost anywhere I want in radar coverage and there are still many ILS and vor approaches to use. Check out jewel aviation and j&b aircraft engines or heart of the west for reasonable overhaul costs. If you find a nice J with a 430W you have a great starting point. I also I want something nicer than an Aspen for the money. If the part 23 rewrite happens I would want a Garmin G3X. It's what is in the most expensive LSAs and really rocks. Quote
Hank Posted March 10, 2015 Report Posted March 10, 2015 I believe the J was introduced in 1977. Before that will be an F; short bodies are C [180 hp, carb] and E [200 hp, fuel injection, same engine as F & J]. Happy shopping! Quote
Seth Posted March 10, 2015 Report Posted March 10, 2015 While I disagree with Seth's $ amount, especially the avionics, I agree completely with his reasoning. Mine was really an estimate - what's a better estimate? I could be way off. Quote
Seth Posted March 10, 2015 Report Posted March 10, 2015 Also, since your son has access to the Malibu for more load carrying and longer trips, what is the true mission of this aircraft? Four seats often? Mainly one or two? Cross countries? Grass Airports? Visiting family out of state? Work? Commuting to college? Lots of IFR? A fuel injected E model may make more sense if a lot of IFR is invovled but probably never more than 2 seats needed. If more than 2 seats or space will be needed, go F or J. I still feel a J that you can fix up your way may make the most sense for this plan. If the six pack is working, an AP is in there, and a 430W is already installed, you can take your time on the avionics upgrades and wait out the changes in law soon as mentioned in another post. Those avionics have lots of capability. If you want the aspen because you already have that in the Malibu, I understand the reasoning. You can pickup a good E for less than 50 and then slowly upgrade it over time. Or a J for $60-$80 and again, upgrade it over time. -Seth Quote
Bshimkus Posted March 10, 2015 Author Report Posted March 10, 2015 So far I think I am learning that we really should look at a J and find one with upgrades already complete? He does fly a fair amount of IFR. He plans to go back and forth to college, beach trips, etc etc. He will still have access to my matrix if he needs a hauler. Any other thoughts on a J are greatly appreciated. Any years to watch out for or look for specifically? Quote
N9405V Posted March 10, 2015 Report Posted March 10, 2015 At your sons stage in his flying career wouldn't an economical twin be an option to consider? It might be nice to get a chunk of multi time in his log book for down the road. Quote
Bshimkus Posted March 10, 2015 Author Report Posted March 10, 2015 you are speaking his language for sure. I just don't know what an economical twin is. His first plan was a Seneca II but maint is terrible Quote
bonal Posted March 10, 2015 Report Posted March 10, 2015 There is a nice J for sale at my home base. you can check it out on LASAR web site. its green and white and looks real nice in person. interior is in good shape though not my first choice of color for seats. very low time engine and new prop. no upgrades on the panel but every thing works. I have flown this plane a few times and it is real fast like 170 plus knots. only thing it really needs is an intercom. I have zero interest or connection in this airplane. its an 1978 model year N201LR Just thought I'd throw that out there wish I was your kid. Damn On July 28, 1976, Air Force officers Al Joersz and George Morgan recorded an official speed of 2,193 mph in a Lockheed SR-71 spy plane. Nearly 40 years later, the record stands. "We didn't go as fast as we could. We just went as fast as we needed to go to set the record. Does anyone know how fast the Black Bird could really go. Quote
Seth Posted March 10, 2015 Report Posted March 10, 2015 You can get a Baron 55 series for J type money, but that's a lot more maintenance. The J will be more economical. It is a plane you can have for YEARS and not outgrow, especially when you just want to go fly yourself, and not burn more than 10 gph, pull back and you are in the 7-8 range - meaning C-172 range at a faster airspeed. Lots of good J's out there and yes - your best bet is to get the best J in the best shape you can find. Whatever is upgraded rarely gets back what you spent when it's time to sell. Find the one with the best setup of what you are looking, and that has been flown often enough that there is not deferred maintenance. Most people spend 10% of the purchase price in the first year on maintenance and/or upgrades - get a pre purchase inspection from an MSC - I know that was suggested before. A great J with Aspen's just sold here last week after being on the market a while - that would have been a good plane for your family. -Seth Quote
N9405V Posted March 10, 2015 Report Posted March 10, 2015 I'd look at either a Cessna 310 or Piper Twin Comanche. Quote
ryoder Posted March 10, 2015 Report Posted March 10, 2015 Go for a Cirrus.... Let the flames fly. Quote
ArtVandelay Posted March 10, 2015 Report Posted March 10, 2015 Mine was really an estimate - what's a better estimate? I could be way off. Aspen x 2, 430w, ADS-B transponder and other work . . . $22,000 (less panel reconfiguration) Aspens are $12K installed, so that's $24K for two... A 430W?, if installing new, go with 650, $12K ADSB transponder, KT74 $3K installed Or go with GDL88 and get WX and traffic, $5.5K Might as well add Flightstream 210, it's only $2K installed I would lose the 2nd Aspen...$35K and you have a sweet panel Quote
