Hi all,

A friend met me at my hangar with his shiny new IPad yesterday. I am VERY impressed with ability of this unit to display Jeppessen plates. There's an application available for free on ITunes for use with the electronic subscription from Jeppessen and the display is wonderful - especially at night.

My issue is the space the IPad occupies in the airplane. It didn't seem to fit comfortable in portrait orientation.

Mitch - I saw the pictures you posted. Can you describe how the unit is mounted on the yoke and post additional pictures?

Has anyone else mounted an IPad in a Mooney cockpit - preferably on the yoke somehow without obstructing the instruments critical to IFR flight?

Thanks and any input is appreciated.

For right now I have my 696 yoke mounted and put the ipad in my lap.  Not optimal but seems to work well.  Keep in mind the Jepps app does not include enroute charts, only procedures.  I use foreflight which for $79 per year is a heck of a deal.

Jeppesen Chartview is now running on the 696. As we don't have NACO charts it is the only way to get approach plates on the 695. I am trying to get it running but have problems to buy the Chartview activation key from Garmin (US$ 499,-). I hope the support will get it fixed today.

Hey Dave and anyone else regarding this-

I just bought a 1977 J model so I am a rookie regarding how all this works BUT I am an IPAD owner and was also trying to think of some way to mount it and be able to see it. Did you ever figure anything out? One option someone mentioned was a flexible boom mounted to the center floor pedestal on the right side, the IPAD attaches to the end of the boom and you can manipulate the boom and Ipad to move where you want. If you want to see it better you flex it up but if someone is sitting in the right seat it would greatly limit your options. Also, I use good reader as an app along with reader plates.com which is a free NOS service. so i get the NOS plates free but no enroute stuff. Any ideas how to get charts on the ipad including TAC for NY etc? I tried Sky Vector which is a good product but its just not engineered for an IPAD yet.

Many cheers!

With the electronic subscription from Jeppessen I believe that the terminals are included electronically (maybe paper?) and the low altitude en-routes are provided in paper format .

I would probably get the Foreflight subscription as well to have everything electronically (a steal at $80/year), but I much prefer Jeppessen's format over NACO.

I looked at the 696 as well and that's where I first got introduced to the electronic plates. It's a GREAT GPS but is quite a pricey at $3 AMU and $400/year for NACO plates with no option for Jeppesen. The western US Jeppesen electronic subscription is $270/year and the IPad is ~ $600.

Just my thought - other opinions welcome!!

ehscott i am a true rookie. i am not familiar with most of the products being mentioned. what exactly is a 696? is that a garmin product? size? cost? where do you mount it? and would it replace my ipad for what it does thereby rendering my ipad as useless at least in the airplane? any advice and info greatly appreciated.

Mark,

The search button at the top right of your screen will be very helpful for finding your basic topics.

Search on a topic such as charts and go down the list.  This is a recent one regarding electronic charts.

the 696 im sure is a good product, but i have an IPAD and id love to use it unless i get enough feedback suggesting there just isnt enough good apps for it yet. the one i did a little research on was foreflight. for about 80 bucks they claim to provide all inclusive, user friendly site that allows for approach chart use (NOS only) lFR and WFR charts alike as well as some weather data. Anyone have operating experience using their IPAD along with foreflight? and if so how is it working out? any complaints? any good advice?

cheers

Good morning Mark,

Fellow East Coaster, find the search button at the top right hand corner of your screen and put "foreflight" into the search field, enter, and scroll down to find the related links.......

You will find a dozen links of pireps on foreflight, mostly good, some indicate direct limitations you will want to know about. There is even a link to avweb that gives a few minute video objectively describing how good / limited it is.

Nothing beats a certified, installed (garmin or other) waas unit for Hard IFR flying.  The 696 comes close, but can only be relied upon for situational awareness.  The IPAD in general is a cool tool, but I would not stake my life on it.  It all depends on how you intend to use it.

Check out what you find in your search.  I think you will be happy.

Best regards,

And he also swore by the 496 before that, and the 396 before that. Pretty much any portable that Garmin makes, Don will swear by.

I just bought into Sky Charts Pro. So far I love it but I do have 3 questions for you guys that have some experience with it.

1) If i want to use the flight planning function I simply hit the Direct to key then type in the routing. But it uses a default 10 gallons an hour and 110 knots on the speed for its performance. Can that be changed/adjusted to reflect your own airplanes #'s? and if so how do you change those settings? Does the flight planning have a "typical routing"/"preferred routing" function for flight planning between two high density airport points?

2) I figured out you have to cache the VFR and IFR charting that you want to have airborne as the WiFi and 3G signals will obviously be gone soon after takeoff. I could not find for example a low enroute overall selection map (Grid of the US with the low enroute oiptions) so I could visually see which ones I would need. Same goes for the VFR Sectionals. Is there such a function? if so how do I get to it?

3) I presume Geo refrencing with these charts is only available on the ground BUT if for example I have an airport diagram up will it display my airplane symbol moving about the taxiways? if so how accurately does it reflect it? and at what point will it stop showing the aiplane symbol? (presume as soon as it loses either wifi or 3G or both. (My Ipad is a 3g version). Also, is there any GPS attachment options (i.e. something blue tooth driven) that might make it possible to geo refrence airborne? Yes I know my 3 questions are more like 10!! But you guys have all already helped me IMMENSELY!

I thank all of you-

Hey Ken

Thanks kindly for the answers. SkyChartsPro will be unbeatable if they can implement a decent low enroute charting graph--same goes for the VFR charts. Also, once they get geo refrencing on TPP charts that will be a huge advantage. I still have not had the opportunity to test SkyCharts airborne so I have another question for you regarding enroute georefrencing. Any particluar IPAD settings that have to be either enabled or disabled to make it work? If so what are they? Also, what technology is the IPad using to do the airborne georefencing?? I thought WiFi wont and cant work airborne and I already know from my iphone that most of the time you cannott get a 3g signal airborne at altitude. Therefore I am at a complete loss to understand how it could possibly georefrence at altitude. Assuming some function of the Ipad allows for this to work how accurate is it? or will it be one of those things where the airplane symbol appears then consistently dissapears etc? so is there a better GPS system that can be added and would it even be worth it. Yes, lots of questions but all of you have helped me immensely!!!

The iPad has its own GPS antenna, in the "3G" model. The georeferencing uses only GPS and the stored charts inside the iPad.
