Mouse "roller" problem

I have no idea about whether this is a MS problem, but the roller in my mouse which moves the screen/page up or down does not work within the posts on a forum. It works fine on the home page, forum page, etc., but when I am within a forum and on a page with the various posts, neither the roller nor the up/down arrows at the top and bottom of the right margin works. The only way to advance the posts is to click and the bar type indicator on the right side and move the mouse up and down.

As I am typing this, the roller will move this message properly.

Is this happening to everyone else, or am I doing something wrong.

And even more strange, if I open a forum subject with no new posts, I can roll down through it. But if there is a new post, I can not roll it up or down.

Mine scrolls just fine, but I only use the desktop in the morning--it's too hard to use the tablet while eating breakfast. Never bothered with Tapatalk.

Yes I have. Same result. Both mice(?) work on every site I have tried it on except for new posts on MS forums.

Hmmm. I've got no problem here this morning, and your post is new since I last visited.

 

I'm running Windows 8 and Explorer version ?. My wireless mouse says "HP" on it.

 

I'm out of ideas. Any computer gurus here? I just use the durned things.

Surely some computer guru has some sort of guess. I have real trouble understanding how the roller on two different mouses work on every site I have checked, and on all parts of Mooneyspace except for "new" posts on each forum. But then again, I don't understand a whole bunch about computers.

Either a software problem web browser or the page created by MS web software would be my guess. You could try Firefox or Chrome browsers to see if they work for you

Don - delete the driver for the mouse in the control panel. If the mouse is wired or wireless either remove the wire or delete the bluetooth connection and reboot. Plug the mouse back in or re-pair the mouse.

If it asks you to use the current driver or search for a new one, select new. See what that does.

I tried disabling and disconnecting my mouse, re-plugged it in and it still acts the same. I opened MS on  my wife's, very similar HP laptop. Hers works fine with my mouse. I has to be something in my laptop, but I can't find anything in the settings for the mouse.

Don - did you delete the driver for the mouse? You may have an older driver that may be corrupted or not working correctly. It will be under "Start" "Control Panel" "Mouse" Driver Details " (I think). Once the driver is deleted and you reboot, it will look for a driver. I would say "no" to the existing driver and there should be an option to search for a new driver.

I think there is something not right with that particular driver. If you need screen shots, let me know.

I located the mouse driver and uninstalled it. When I plugged it back in, it apparently reinstalled it without telling me or asking me anything.

If the deinstallation and reinstallation of the driver didn't fix it, try deleting the driver again but this time don't reboot. See if there is a search routine in the driver section that allows you to search the web for a new driver.

If not, you may be forced to find a copy of the driver for your particular mouse from the manufacturer's website and download it to a location on your PC. Once there, you should be able to specify the location of this new driver.

I uninstalled the driver. I went online and found the driver for the mouse (Microsoft) and installed it. When I plugged it back in, it automatically installed the driver (and indicated it was the driver I had installed).

Still no joy.

I appreciate the help, but don't lose any sleep over it. It is just nice to be able to scroll down through the posts rather than having to go over and pull the bar down.

For anyone who followed this, or cares; Today I inadvertently opened MS is regular Google and my roller works fine. I can't understand it at all, but my comprehension is not important.

I'm not aware of any Google browsers other than Chrome.  Could you clarify what you mean by "regular Google"?

I looked a little and found that Google is a web search engine, whereas Google Chrome is a web browser. I have no idea what that means. However before this happened, the Google folks asked if I wanted to upgrade?/change to Google Chrome. I ignored them. Then when this problem arose, I installed Google Chrome. When I opened Google, the problem existed. When I opened Google Chrome, the problem went away. Now, either way works OK.

Don, it is not very complicated. Google is a company. Like all such companies is was founded quite recently by very young, now very rich, geeks. MicroSoft Corp is another company. Also founded by young geeks who are even richer though not so young any more.

 

Microsoft (MS) markets an "operating system", the software needed to use a computer. The current version of their OS is called "Windows" it is not very good and has been patched and replaced enough times that it is now called Windows 8. (There have been many more that 8 versions, they use decimals, but let's keep it simple.)

 

(Apple Computers is another company. I suspect you can guess who founded it and whether they died rich.)

 

At this perverted point in history our stand alone computers want to connect to the World Wide Web of other computers and the vast information resident on them. To navigate the billions of possible places we can be connected to requires a "Web Browser". MS makes a browser. It is aptly named Internet Explorer (IE). IE is "packaged" with MS Windows and comes with every (WINTEL- don't ask) computer. But even though it is free and it is already installed on your computer you have discovered that IE has bugs and may not play nice with hardware and other software, even other MS software. (See note above on MS operating systems). So many folks have installed Google Company's browser not-so-descriptively named "Chrome". And because two defective Browsers is not chalenging enough, many masochists also install Mozilla Company's browser "FireFox". All these wonderful if flawed products are free, if you don't put a value on the time you spend cussing them. Of course nothing is free in this life so you can expect lots of annoying features built into the software that you did not pay for. These hidden busy beavers slow down your system while collecting information about you and doing who knows what other nefarious deeds.

 

In summary, MS's IE, Google's Chrome, and Mozilla's Firefox are all doing the same thing, connecting us to the WWW. Think Ford, Chevy, Chrysler,
