201er Posted July 31, 2014 Report Posted July 31, 2014 Flying for over 9 years, this was the first time I made it out to Oshkosh Air Venture! At first I was renting and didn't really have a chance, later when I got my Mooney I did not feel adequately prepared or qualified. Then I had a few years when I was busy during the event. Well this year, no more excuses! IFR into massive headwinds got us there slowly but surely. Cancelled the IFR once over the lake and proceeded to Rippon for the FISK arrival. I had been told by aviators that this is the hardest approach to do. I heard horror tales of traffic. Some even advised me to not even bother with OSH and just go straight to one of the satellite airports. Well with 4 pairs of eyes and the intent of Oshkosh or bust, we went for the arrival. Yes, it was busy. But it was manageable. Unlike the Hudson (where traffic primarily flows in two predictable directions), aircraft approach and self-sequence at Rippon from all directions. This is the only difficult part. Once in sequence, you just follow the Conga line in half mile trail, 1,800ft at 90 knots. Landed smack on the yellow dot and pulled off into the grass. This wasn't just a fly in, it was a pilgrimage. Met so many people I know, Mooney pilots and others. It was a blast. No trouble. Extremely impressed with how well organized everything is. Everyone, bird included, had an outstanding time. Will be doing this again for sure. More photos and write up on my parrot blog. 4 Quote
scottfromiowa Posted July 31, 2014 Report Posted July 31, 2014 SUPERB video. Thanks for sharing. The starburst with your buddy at the end was perfection! Great stuff. If that doesn't get you fired up for Oshkosh, you don't dig planes.... Quote

bnicolette Posted August 1, 2014 Report Posted August 1, 2014 Nope! Been to Sun n Fun but never OSH. I really really want to go and ever since I've had my own plane something has always gotten in the way. I'd really like to take CJ and just camp beside the plane. Someday! Quote
