aaronk25 Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 Well we all know how us Mooney drivers can be thrifty at times and wanted to share a couple pictures. I'm driving from Rochester MN to Kennett MO to Jewell Aviation to drop my Engine off for overhaul. I wanted to personally tour the shop and meet the guys. I had the choice of driving my newer company pickup or driving my 2000 VW diesel with 302k miles and I think the Mooney crowd is rubbing off on me because the first thing I did was figure the fuel consumption with the truck at 18mpg or the VW at 50mpg.... Truck 70 gallons round trip VW 24gallons.... Company pays for fuel either way, but just love the efficiency...... Only took 20 min to load, would have been 1/2 of that if I had a second person to help. 5 Quote
aaronk25 Posted July 20, 2014 Author Report Posted July 20, 2014 Would be good to see you there again Jim! Oh and by the way I only tied the rope to the loader to just give me a few more inches, didn't use the loader to pull it in........ Quote
N601RX Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 Your jetta is still has low mileage. My 2001 model has 430,000 miles and I still drive it every day, it still gets gets 50+ mpg. 1 Quote

When I took my io-360 5 hours up to Portland, I stopped at a local tire shop (les schwab), got an old tire, put the io-360 on the tire and drove it up. I went through roughly the same number of gallons of gas... But the trip in the jetta took 11 hours round trip, instead of 2.5.... Still... When your runway is 40 feet, and your IFR flight plan is 7 miles in blowing snow, a Jetta is a great answer! 1 Quote
neilpilot Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 Aaron, I think Jewell will do a good job on your engine. Â While my only engine work at Kennett has been a cylinder rebuild, I've had Sam and David Jewell do my Mooney annuals every year but one since 1995. Â They are a fair and honest shop, and have been very happy with the work quality. Â We picked up our 65C at Jewell, just out of annual, on Saturday. Â As a fellow thrifty Mooney driver, it also doesn't hurt that the 100LL at TKX is currently $4.69 1 Quote
rbridges Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 that's hilarious. Â your truck probably would get 20 mpg if you ran it LOP. Â 3 Quote

Been running about 73mph. Got to slow up to 67mpg to get 50mpg....oh well..... Quote

aaronk25 Posted July 21, 2014 Author Report Posted July 21, 2014 Just dropped it off. Sam Jewell and his son David seem like a top notch bunch of guys. Sam was deep in the middle of a 6 cylinder engine when I got there. We had a in depth discussion about re-ground lifters vs new. I've heard the same story from Buldoc as well as Sam. There all nervous of new lycoming lifters. They will both gladly put them in but they said that the reground ones are typically what they use as the "metal has proven itself". Both engine shops said aircraft specialties rejects any lifters that have any significant wear and they just touch them up. Neither shop really seemed to have any skin in the game as they both said we will put in whatever parts you want, but we have seen a lot of low time lifter failures on new lycoming lifters. Thoughts? Re-ground sounds like such a dirty word......I'm thinking new, but both shops have a point that at least deserves some consideration. Quote
scottfromiowa Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 Glad the little pumper deuce got 'r done Aaron. Safe travels, Scott Quote
